Moon Township, Pa. – The
Robert Morris University softball team concluded play in the Runnin' Bulldog Softball Tournament Sunday, dropping a 3-2 decision to the host Bulldogs in 11 innings at Brinkley Stadium. The Colonials finished 2-3 at the tourney and own a 4-5 overall record on the 2020 campaign.
MOMENTS THAT MATTERED
Gardner-Webb scored the winning run in the bottom of the 11th inning, as Trinity Strerrett scored on a wild pitch from
Dana Vatakis. The loss didn't damper an otherwise stellar performance from the sophomore, who pitched 10.1 innings in the contest, allowing just two earned runs. She scattered eight hits on the afternoon, striking out four and walking one.
ANSWERING THE BELL
The Bulldogs scored a run in the bottom of the first and another in the bottom of the fourth, with the Colonials following with runs of their own in the top half of the next frame to tie the score. In the second inning, sophomore
Erika Bell led off the inning with a single and came around to score on a throwing error. Three innings later, RMU tied the game for a second time, 2-2, courtesy of an RBI single from senior
Briana Bunner that drove home junior
Alaina York.
MULTI-HIT EFFORTS
Senior
Madison Riggle got the start at first and recorded the second three-hit game of the young 2020 season with a 3-for-5 performance against the Bulldogs. Through nine games she is hitting .357 (10-for-28) with three runs, two home runs and six RBI. Bell also recorded a multi-hit effort against Gardner-Webb, finishing 2-for-4 with a run.
