Robert Morris University softball team concluded play in the Blue Hose Invitational Sunday in Clinton, S.C., with a 6-3 loss to Norfolk State at the PC Softball Complex. The Colonials finish the tournament with a 2-2 (.500) record.
MOMENTS THAT MATTERED
The Spartans scored five runs in the bottom of the second inning on just three hits and were aided by three RMU errors. Jazzmaine Hammond provided an RBI single to left center, while Shelby Deschamps drove in a pair with another single. None of the six runs allowed by sophomore
Dana Vatakis on the afternoon were earned. She struck out five and walked two in her second outing of the season while yielding five hits.

Madison Riggle continued her hot start to the 2020 season Sunday, putting the Colonials on the board with a solo home run to left center in top of the sixth. In just four games Riggle has already doubled her career home run output, and she finished the season-opening tournament having produced a .455 batting average (5-for-11) with three runs and six RBI. She also has shown a keen eye at the dish, walking four times.

Natalie Higgins collected two more hits Sunday against the Spartans, finishing 2-for-4 with a run and two RBI. She provided a two-run shot to left in the top of the seventh that drove in freshman
Antonia Schaefer, who opened the inning be reaching on a throwing error. Higgins has opened the 2020 campaign having hit .462, scoring four times and driving in a team-high seven. She concluded the Blue Hose Invitational by collecting hits safely in six of her final 10 at bats after opening the year with an 0-for-3 performance against Presbyterian (2/7).
UP NEXT
Robert Morris returns to action Friday, Feb. 14, with a pair of games at the Gardner-Webb Tournament. The Colonials take on Valparaiso at 10:00 a.m. before facing Colgate at Noon. The tournament for RMU is scheduled for five games in three days.
