Moon Township, Pa. – The
Robert Morris University softball team concluded play in the Seahawk Softball Challenge Sunday by posting a 6-5 victory over UNCW at Boseman Field. Improving to 3-2 (.600) in 2020 in one-run games, the Colonials also moved their overall record on the year to 6-8 (.429).
MOMENTS THAT MATTERED
RMU never trailed in the contest, pushing three runs across the plate in the top of the second to grab an early lead. Senior
Briana Bunner opened the inning with a single off Rylee Pate, moved to second on a groundout and followed by stealing third. Sophomore
Brittney Seibert reached on a fielder's choice, setting up senior
Taryn Miller, who smacked a two-run double to left. Miller would come around to score the third run of the inning on a throwing error.
ONE RUN
The Seahawks (4-14) scored a pair in the home half of the third inning, but Robert Morris got a run back in the top of the fourth, as a sacrifice fly from Miller scored junior
Alaina York, who pinch ran for senior
Madison Riggle. UNCW got that run back in the bottom of the fourth, closing its deficit to 4-3, but each time the Seahawks pulled to within a run, the Colonials would add on.
MAYHEM
Robert Morris added a pair of insurance runs in the top of the seventh, which once again came with two outs. Bunner doubled down the left field line, and Riggle re-entered the lineup and smacked a two-run home run to center, her third of the season, to give RMU a 6-3 lead. The runs proved important, as the Seahawks scored two in the bottom of the seventh. Sophomore
Dana Vatakis, who came on in relief of
Rachael Rhinehart, retired the last three batters after giving up two runs, including the final out with a strikeout of Hunter Bizzell.
THREE'S COMPANY
Bunner collected her first three-hit game of the 2020 season Sunday, finishing 3-for-4 with a double and two runs scored. She bumped her average 59 points during the Seahawk Softball Challenge and is hitting .326 on the year. Miller went 2-for-2 with a run, three RBI and a pair of doubles Sunday and collected three multi-hit efforts during the tournament. She hit .467 (7-for-15) at the Seahawk Softball Challenge.

Robert Morris heads to Clearwater, Fla., March 6-8, to take part in the Clearwater Spring Break Invitational. The Colonials will play five games in three days.
