Offense Can't Get On Track Against Army

Colonials finish with two hits in final game of Clearwater Spring Invitational

Moon Township, Pa. – The Robert Morris University softball team wrapped up play in the Clearwater Spring Break Invitational Sunday, dropping a 3-0 decision to Army West Point at the Eddie C. Moore Complex. The Colonials dip to 8-11 (.421) overall in 2020.

MOMENTS THAT MATTERED
RMU was unable to get its offense on track against Jolie Duong of the Black Knights, who went the distance, striking out eight and allowing just two hits. She faced just two batters above the minimum by not issuing a free pass to the Colonials. Senior Taryn Miller doubled to left center with two outs in the second, and the other hit for Robert Morris came with two out in the fifth as sophomore Kristýna Malá singled.

TOE THE LINE
Sophomore Dana Vatakis matched Duong through the first three innings, as she retired each of the first nine Black Knights to step to the plate. Army West Point broke through in the fourth, scoring all three of its runs on three hits. Ally Snelling provided the big hit with a two-run single, but the Black Knights were aided by two Robert Morris errors during the inning.

SENIOR SALUTE
Almost 20 games into the 2020 campaign, and each of RMU's top four hitters are seniors. Senior Natalie Higgins tops the team at .349 (22-for-63), while senior Briana Bunner sits at .339 (20-for-59). Miller is hitting .321 (17-for-53) on the year, while senior Madison Riggle is at .308 (16-for-59). The quartet have started each of RMU's 19 games this season and have combined for 26 runs, 40 RBI, 16 doubles and eight home runs.
