PITTSBURGH, Pa. - The Robert Morris University men's soccer team fell in overtime 1-0 against top-ranked Cleveland State at the North Athletic Complex Wednesday afternoon.
Gal Ben Dayan led RMU with two shots on target as the Colonials drop to 3-4 in Horizon League play.
The Colonials defensive structure proved to be a challenge for the Vikings to navigate as RMU did well to step up and close off passing lanes, transitioning quickly to fast breaks on the counter on a number of different occasions.
Bryan Akongo nearly capitalized off the Colonials' transition game midway through the first, making a run starting in the central midfield before pulling up and firing a hard strike from just outside the box that was saved by CSU keeper Omeed Naeemy before RMU could get to the rebound.Â
Grant Glorioso came up big on a few chances when the Vikings did manage to break through, making three saves in the first 45 minutes of action including two on Jannis Schmidt from just inside the box to help preserve the 0-0 tie.Â
Both sides patiently continued to look for the opening goal as the second dragged on and quality chances became harder to come by.
Owen Jowett thought he opened the scoring near the 60' mark, however his initial goal was waved off after officials ruled the CSU keeper had possession of the ball prior to Jowett's effort to knock it into the net.
They came close again in the first extra frame when Drew Kemper's header off a corner initially looked like it may have crossed the line, however it was once again ruled no goal as play continued.
CSU finally ended things with under six to play courtesy of a Pablo Kawecki strike from just outside the box.
