PITTSBURGH, Pa. - The Robert Morris women's basketball team earned a 69-45 win over Morehead State Wednesday afternoon at the UPMC Events Center, taking down the visiting Eagles to improve their record to 2-3 overall.
MOMENTS THAT MATTERED
The Colonials headed into the half Wednesday with a 31-13 lead, their largest of the season to date. After a MSU layup cut the RMU lead to 6-5 with 4:04 to play in the opening quarter, RMU locked in over the final four minutes, ending on an 8-2 run that saw Mackenzie Amalia and Alejandra Mastral knock down back-to-back threes to help give the Colonials a 14-5 cushion after one. RMU kept its foot on the gas in the second, out-scoring the Eagles 17-8 to end the opening 20 minutes up 18 points.
SHARE THE WEALTH
RMU utilized a balanced offense in their win against Morehead State, as 12 of the 13 Colonials that saw the floor Wednesday recorded at least two points. Led by a career-high from freshmen Phoenix Gedeon (12) as well as a double-digit effort from Alejandra Mastral (11), RMU earned its biggest win (24) since taking down Saint Franics (Pa.) 62-29 back on March 5, 2019. Gedeon in particular enjoyed a phenomenal day shooting, going 4-5 from the field and a perfect 4-4 at the foul line to lead RMU in scoring for the first time this season. Gedeon and Mastral's performances were part of a dominant effort from a Colonials bench that posted 42 points combined against the Eagles.
CHECKING IN
Freshman Janeira Scott became the final member of the RMU freshman class to make her season debut Wednesday, and the Bridgeville, Delaware native wasted no time making her presence felt on the floor. Scott stepped up and buried a deep three on her first career shot with 3:02 left in the game before dishing a nice assist to Jazmyne Deshields a few minutes later. She finished with three points in three minutes of game time.
QUOTABLES
"It's nice to get them all involved. I felt there were some good minutes being played, especially in the bulk of the game, and then down the stretch when you put so many young ones out there you're going to have some sloppy turnovers or miscommunication here or there, but there were some real bright spots. Knocking down some shots and running some plays well, you're going to have some give-and-take like that, but it's nice to see them get out there together and really enjoy the last few minutes." - Head Coach Charlie Buscaglia
QUOTABLES
"At first it wasn't our best game, but then we started getting there on the rebounds, the offensive boards and defensive boards, we we're hustling and had that mentality that every 50-50 ball is going our way. I think we used that to build a good foundation for the rest of the game, then we start making buckets and just keep going." - Sophomore Sol Castro
