Moon Township, Pa. – The RMU men's basketball team continued a three-game road trip Thursday, falling to Green Bay, 70-58, at the Resch Center in Green Bay, Wisc., in its Horizon League opener. The Colonials slip to 0-6 for the 2021-22 season.
MOMENTS THAT MATTERED
Tied, 51-51, with 9:37 remaining, the Phoenix used a 10-5 spurt to grab a 61-54 advantage. Emmanuel Ansong snapped the tie with a layup and scored four points during the run, while Donovan Ivory added four more for Green Bay (2-5 / 1-0 #HLMBB). The Phoenix had success at the rim in the Horizon League opener, outscoring the Colonials in the paint, 46-18. Ansong was an efficient 11-for-15 from the field in scoring a game-high 23 points, including four dunks. Green Bay also held an 18-7 cushion in points off turnovers and the bench for the Phoenix outscored the RMU reserves, 18-5.
THE SECOND HALF
Green Bay converted at a 53.8 percent (14-for-26) clip from the field in the second half and overall in the contest shot an even 50 percent (28-for-56) from the floor. The Phoenix were even better at the rim against the Colonials, knocking down 17 of their 19 shots, a success rate of 89.4 percent. RMU, meanwhile, was unsuccessful on each of its final 12 shots of the contest in the final nine and-a-half minutes of the game. Over the last three games, opponents are converting 61.8 percent (47-for-76) of its attempts from the field after halftime.
THE OPENER
The Colonials grabbed their biggest lead of the contest at the 11:52 mark of the first half, using a 9-2 surge to grab a 17-11 advantage. Fifth-year guard
Rasheem Dunn ignited the run with a three-pointer and contributed five points, while sophomore guard
Kam Farris and senior forward
Kahliel Spear each converted baskets. RMU also held a 20-15 edge after a three-pointer from senior forward
Jaron Williams, but a 7-0 spurt pushed Green Bay back in front. The first half featured five ties and six lead changes, with RMU converting an even 50 percent (10-for-20) of its shots from the field in the opening 20 minutes, including 4-for-6 from beyond the arc.
INSIDE THE BOXSCORE
Green Bay registered 20 assists on its 28 field goals Thursday, with eight different Phoenix posting at least one dime. Lucas Steiber handed out a game-high six assists and also helped seal the victory with 2:13 remaining, nailing a three-pointer that gave Green Bay a 66-56 cushion. Dunn paced the Colonials with 17 points on the strength of an 8-for-9 performance at the free-throw line and also notched four rebounds, four assists and a pair of steals, while junior forward
Justin Winston scored 11 of his 16 points in the second half.
