Moon Township, Pa. – The RMU men's basketball team concluded its 2020-21 regular season Saturday, falling to Detroit Mercy, 80-61, at Calihan Hall. The Colonials enter the 2021 Horizon League Tournament with an overall record of 4-14 (.222).
MOMENTS THAT MATTERED
The Titans used a 27-9 run over the first eight and-a-half minutes of the second half to turn a seven-point deficit at the break into an 11-point advantage. RMU owned a 39-32 lead at halftime, but the duo of Antoine Davis and Noah Waterman combined for 25 points during the run to help UDM (11-9 / 10-6 HL) grab a double-digit lead, 59-48. The Titans converted nine of their 14 attempts from the floor during the surge, including a 6-for-9 performance from beyond the arc, as Waterman led the way with 15 points.
A TALE OF TWO HALVES
RMU was efficient in the first half, shooting 62.5 percent (15-for-24) from the floor and owning a 15-12 edge on the glass in building a seven-point advantage at the break. Waterman connected from downtown early to give the Titans a 10-8 lead, but senior forward
Charles Bain answered on RMU's next possession with a triple of his own to push the Colonials back in front. The three-pointer ignited a 21-9 salvo to give the Colonials a 29-19 cushion with just over seven minutes left before halftime. Bain scored eight points during the run as RMU was 7-for-8 from the floor.
THE SECOND HALF
RMU only knocked down two of its 13 attempts from beyond the arc in the second half, part of a 31 percent (9-for-29) shooting performance for the Colonials after the break. UDM capitalized and caught fire, shooting 57.1 percent (16-for-28) in the second half. Overall, RMU shot 45.3 percent (24-for-53).
FINDING THE TOUCH
Bain paced the Colonials for the second consecutive game Saturday, scoring a game-high 18 points while also leading RMU with seven rebounds. Over the two-game set with the Titans, Bain averaged 18.5 points and shot 51.7 percent (15-for-29) from the field. He enters the 2021 Horizon League Tournament having reached double figures in four consecutive games. Junior forward
Kahliel Spear added 10 points, four rebounds, three assists and a pair of steals for RMU in the series finale.
