Moon Township, Pa. – Sol Castro, a freshman forward on the Robert Morris University women's basketball team, was named to the Horizon League All-Freshman Team, as announced by the league Tuesday morning.
Castro, a native of Rio Colorado, Argentina, has put together an impressive rookie campaign and currently leads Robert Morris in scoring (9.9), rebounding (5.4), and minutes played (28.6). She also slots second on the team in field goal percentage (.457) and blocks (0.5), and third in assists (1.4) and steals (0.9). Castro has a chance to become the first Colonial newcomer since Sugeiry Monsac in 2004-05 to lead the team in scoring and rebounding, the first freshman to pace the team in points since Missy Spangler in 2001-02, and the first freshman to ever top her teammates in rebounding and field goal percentage.

One of three RMU players to start every game in 2020-21, Castro's breakout weekend came against Horizon League co-regular-season champion Wright State, as she averaged 21.5 points, 8.0 rebounds, and 1.5 blocks in a pair of wins on Jan. 22-23. The forward was named Nike/Horizon League Freshman of the Week for her performance, and she followed that up with four additional double-digit scoring efforts – becoming the first Colonial freshman since Anna Niki Stamolamprou in 2013-14 to reach double figures in six straight games. Castro scored a career-high 23 points on Jan. 22 against Wright State, pulled down a career-best 15 rebounds on Jan. 29 versus Youngstown State, and has nine double-digit scoring performances this season, two of 20 or more points, and three double-doubles.
The All-Freshman Team consists of Castro, Destiny Leo of Cleveland State, Jaida McCloud of UIC, Emani Jefferson of Wright State, and Nneka Obiazor of Youngstown State. Obiazor was tabbed as Freshman of the Year, and Leo earned Sixth Player of the Year.
