DETROIT, Mich. - The Robert Morris University women's soccer team dropped a midweek showdown with Detroit Mercy Wednesday afternoon at Titan Field, falling 2-1 in extra time.
The loss drops RMU to 1-6-0 (1-6-0 HL) on the season. Kaoru Hayashi scored the lone goal for RMU, her first of the season.
Another early goal conceded by the Colonials put them behind the eight-ball Wednesday against the Titans.
An opening salvo from Detroit Mercy included five shots and a pair of corners before Tia Jokic eventually made it 1-0, capping off the Titan possession with a crossing effort into the box that slipped behind Courtney Worstell in goal to make it 1-0 in the 15'.
It took a few more scoring chances against before RMU was able to settle down and begin to counter with chances of its own.
Hayashi pushed her effort wide of the mark in the 23', drawing a corner shortly thereafter. Despite the chance, RMU could not capitalize on the set piece. Minutes later, Sheridan Reid hit the post with a strong effort from just inside the box as the Colonials tried to break the stalemate.
The Colonials tried to muster one final rush before time expired on the opening half, however the official's offside flag went up to end the push in the first for RMU.
Despite the first-half deficit, RMU kept pressing and soon found the equalizer courtesy of Kaoru Hayashi, whose strike beat DM keeper Marisa Silver clean in the 62' to level things at 1-1 for the Colonials.
After enjoying a 12-3 advantage in total shots in the first half of play, Detroit Mercy found themselves facing a much sharper and more focused RMU squad in the second.
Reid followed up Hayashi's strike with a pair of chances in quick succession in the 75' minute, testing Silver with two of what would be nine shots in the second for the Colonials.
RMU pushed furiously to end it in regulation, earning three shots as well as a corner in the final ten minutes of action but couldn't find a second tally as the game headed to overtime.
Despite three consecutive corners in the first OT period, the Colonials could not convert either of the set pieces into a goal. Worstell managed a save on DM's only chance of the first extra frame at the other end to keep it tied.
Hailey Wentzloff finally ended things in the 106' for Detroit, following up her initial shot that Worstell saved with a second effort, knocking in the rebound to give the Titans the win.
