Jon Williams has been selected to take part in the 32nd annual State Farm College Slam Dunk & 3-Point Championships, which will be held Thursday, April 1, 2021, in Indianapolis, Ind., at Hinkle Fieldhouse on the campus of Butler University. Williams is one of eight players that will compete in the three-point championship, which can be seen live on at 9:00 p.m. on ESPN2.
Williams, a native of Akron, Ohio, concluded his career with the Colonials in 2020-21 by averaging 10.7 points and 5.1 assists per game. He started each of his 18 contests on the year and led the Horizon League in three-point field goal percentage (.440), knocking down 48 of his 109 opportunities from deep.
In the NCAA Division I national rankings for the 2020-21 campaign, Williams ranks sixth in three-point field goal percentage through the first two rounds of the 2021 NCAA Tournament, while his assist-to-turnover ratio of 4.00 is currently tops in the NCAA. Williams handed out 92 assists on the season while suffering just 23 turnovers.
In his four years as a member of the Colonials, Williams started each of his 120 career games, becoming just the third student-athlete in program history to reach the threshold. Former guard Velton Jones (2008-13) owns the school record for starts with 125, while Williams is tied for second with former guard Jeremy Chappell, who earned 120 starting assignments from 2005 to 2009. Williams also ranks ninth all-time in program history for career games played.
Williams produced career averages of 7.1 points, 4.1 assists and 2.1 rebounds per contest, successfully knocking down 41.1 percent (209-for-508) of his attempts from beyond the arc and 78.2 percent (104-for-133) at the free-throw line. Elsewhere in the RMU career record book, Williams ranks fourth in assists (493), second in assist-to-turnover ratio (1.99), sixth in three-point field goals and seventh in three-point field goal percentage.
In his final home game, Williams scored a career-high 22 points against Oakland (2/23/21) at the UPMC Events Center thanks to a 7-for-10 performance from downtown. It marked his second career 20-point effort, as Williams contributed 20 points in a 98-89 overtime win over Cornell (3/19/19) at the North Athletic Complex in the first round of the 2019 CollegeInsider.com Postseason Tournament (CIT). In his four years at RMU, Williams helped the Colonials qualify for the 2019 CIT and an automatic berth in the 2020 NCAA Tournament.
Intersport, producers of the event, invites 24 of the nation's elite men's and women's basketball players to compete in the State Farm College Slam Dunk & 3-Point Championships (eight dunkers, along with eight men's and women's shooters). The program showcases the dunking and sharp-shooting talents of the nation's top college basketball players during the Men's 3-Point Championship, the Rocket Mortgage Women's 3-Point Championship, the Battle of the Champions, the Great Clips Slam Dunk Championship and the IHOP Team Shootout. A complete roster of participants will be released at a later date.
For more than 30 years, several of the top players in college basketball have competed in the College Slam Dunk & 3-Point Championships, including Gary Payton, Steve Nash, Jason Terry, Kyle Korver, Bobby Hurley, Michael Finley, Allan Houston, Wesley Matthews, Yogi Ferrell, Cappie Pondexter, Katie Gearlds, Kristi Toliver, Tiffany Hayes and Ariel Atkins.
