Moon Township, Pa. – The RMU rowing team opened its 2021 season Sunday by taking part in the Occoquan Sprints, hosted by George Mason University, in Fairfax, Va.

MOMENTS THAT MATTERED
The Varsity 8 highlighted the first competition in almost 17 months, claiming gold with a time of 6:58.50. The Colonials outlasted George Mason (7:11.79) as well as Loyola (Md.) (7:30.85). The RMU Second Varsity 8 finished second, recording a time of 7:31.08.

QUOTABLE
"It's been 508 days since we've had the privilege of being on a race course, so the overall theme was pure joy and gratitude," first-year head coach Carol Schoenecker said. "I'm constantly impressed with how well this team is able to adapt to any situation, which included a series of last minute lineup changes."

FOUR STARS
The RMU Varsity 4 also earned silver at the Occoquan Sprints, recording a time of 8:10.74. In the second Varsity Four race, the RMU "B" boat posted a time of 8:21.71 to outlast the RMU "A" boat, which crossed the finish line in 8:31.38. Both boats finished ahead of a pair of boats from Loyola (Md.).

RESULTS: Occoquan Sprints (3/28/21)

NOVICE
A pair of RMU Novice Four boats competed for the Colonials at the Occoquan Sprints, competing in a series of one-minute pieces against host George Mason. Both novice fours for RMU traded back and forth between first and second place.

QUOTABLE
"What today shows more than anything else is the incredible depth we have as a program and the desire these women have to keep building speed," Schoenecker said. "George Mason did a tremendous job creating a fun and exciting race environment for our first race back. We're excited to get some racing action on our home course this weekend against Marietta."

UP NEXT
The first of two home competitions from McPhail Boathouse at the RMU Island Sports Center is set for Saturday, April 3, when the Colonials host Marietta.
