AKRON, Oh. The Robert Morris University women's lacrosse team improved to 10-2 overall and a perfect 6-0 in MAC play Saturday afternoon with a 18-4 win over the Akron Zips.
Twelve different Colonials scored in the victory, led by Colleen Tifft and Mackenzie Gandy each with a hat trick as RMU maintains its spot atop the MAC standings.
In what was arguably their most balanced half of the season, RMU raced out to an 11-0 lead in the first 30 minutes of play against the Zips as nine different goal scorers combined to give the Colonials a commanding lead early.
Melanie Gandy kicked things off just 2:14 off the opening draw, beating Akron keeper Abby Lerch for her first of the game.
Jordan Anderson converted a free position attempt to make it 2-0 before Mackenzie Gandy joined her sister on the scoresheet, making it a three goal lead for RMU just 4:07 into the first half.
RMU was once again able to maintain their rhythm of attack thanks in large part to Jordan Anderson's prowess in the draw control unit. The sophomore finished with six draws in the first half, part of an 8-4 mark overall for RMU.
Hannah Miller, Clio Kerr, Isabelle Robarge and Colleen Tifft combined to make it seven straight goals from seven different players midway through the first before Mackenzie Gandy's second of the day pushed the lead to eight.
They would end the half up eleven goals with a running clock following the opening half offensive barrage.
Tifft completed her hat trick to keep the momentum rolling for RMU at the onset of the second, capping off a phenomenal sequence from Melanie Gandy in which the attacker caused a turnover on Akron's Mackenzie Kirwan before scooping the ground ball and setting up Tifft with a nice assist on the third goal, one of four helpers on the day for Gandy.
With the clock continuing to roll, the Colonials also received goals from Kelley Flynn and Isabelle Robarge as well as the second of the year from Emilie Kim.
Though Akron managed to get a few back with time winding down, the Colonials held a MAC opponent to under five goals for the fourth time this season to come away with the eventual 18-4 win.
They finished the afternoon with a 32-10 advantage in total shots as well as a 28-8 edge in shots on goal.
