YOUNGSTOWN, Oh. - The Robert Morris University women's lacrosse team closed out its road schedule with a 23-12 win over the Youngstown State Penguins Saturday afternoon to improve to a perfect 9-0 in MAC play.
The win also improves the 2021 MAC Champs' overall record to 13-2 on the year, a new single-season program record for victories in one season. Clio Kerr and Mackenzie Gandy led RMU with five goals each, while Gandy's seven points paced the Colonials on the day. Â
In a mirror of their title clinching win over Detroit Mercy earlier this week, Robert Morris saw eight different goal scorers combine for 11 total as the Colonials built up an 11-3 first half lead Saturday in Youngstown.Â
After an early shot from Gianna Anthony was saved, Hannah Miller managed to finally put RMU on the board and up 1-0 just over three minutes in, picking up a nice feed from Mackenzie Gandy before firing a hard shot that beat YSU keeper Elicia Wells for her ninth of the season.Â
The quick-strike capability of the Colonials went to work, adding two more goals in the span of just 45 seconds as Julia Koterwas and Jordan Anderson combined to make it a 3-0 RMU lead.Â
After Gandy, Kerr and Thalia Zolis each picked up their firsts of the day, Kerr heaped on the offense with a historic tally minutes later, scoring her second of the half to become just the 16th player in program history to record 100 career points.Â
She would add a third to finish off the hat trick and help RMU take an 11-3 lead into the half.Â
Despite the deficit, the Penguins managed a solid pushback to start the second, scoring three times in the first four minutes to trim RMU's lead down to just 11-6 with over 25 minutes left to play.Â
Though RMU picked up goals from Melanie Gandy and Lilli Hadden, a 7-3 run for Youngstown State helped to keep the Colonials on their heels throughout much of the second, at one point cutting it down to just a 14-10 RMU lead with over 16 minutes remaining.Â
They would never get closer, however, as the Colonials stepped on the gas over the final 15 minutes of action, closing out YSU on a 9-2 run.Â
Eight of RMU's 23 goals were scored on special teams, including two player-down goals from Kerr.
RMU closes out the regular season next Thursday, May 6 when they host Detroit Mercy at 3:00 p.m. Â
