Castro to Play in FIBA Women’s Americup with Argentina

Sol Castro joins the Argentina Senior National Team for the FIBA Americas tournament

Moon Township, Pa.Sol Castro, a rising sophomore forward on the RMU women's basketball team, has made Argentina's 12-player roster for this month's International Basketball Federation (FIBA) Women's Americup 2021. The 10-team tournament will be held in San Juan, Puerto Rico from June 11-19.

Castro is the third youngest and only collegiate player on Argentina's roster. Argentina was placed in Group B and will face the Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico, United States, and Venezuela, while Group A consists of Brazil, Canada, Colombia, El Salvador, and the Virgin Islands. She and her teammates begin play on Friday, June 11 against the Dominican Republic, followed by a Saturday, June 12 contest versus Puerto Rico. Argentina takes on Venezuela on Sunday, June 13, and completes Group B play against the United States on Tuesday, June 15.

The Rio Colorado, Argentina product was stellar as a freshman, becoming the first rookie since Missy Spangler in 2001-02 to lead RMU in scoring. Castro was named to the Horizon League All-Freshman Team after averaging 9.9 points, 5.5 rebounds, and 1.5 assists in 29.1 minutes per game. She recorded three double-doubles in 17 starts, tallied double-digit points nine times, and eclipsed 20 points twice. On Jan. 25, Castro was named Nike/Horizon League Freshman of the Week after averaging 21.5 points, 8.0 rebounds, and 1.5 blocks in a two-game sweep of eventual conference champion Wright State.

Castro has been a fixture on the Argentina national team over her career, having previously represented her home country at the U18, U19, and Senior levels. She played against Brazil and the United States in the 2019 FIBA Women's Olympic Pre-Qualifying Americas Tournament, and also competed in the FIBA U19 World Cup that year, averaging 6.3 points, 6.3 rebounds, and 0.9 steals in 28.9 minutes per contest. Castro claimed bronze at the 2018 FIBA U18 Americas Championships after providing 7.0 points, 9.2 rebounds, and 1.5 assists in 24 minutes per game.

RMU earned a pair of wins over Horizon League regular-season and tournament champion Wright State in 2020-21, and is slated to return its top three scorers in Castro, Nina Augustin, and Esther Castedo. The Colonials won 20 or more games in five of their last six seasons, and are the only Division I program to rank inside the top four of the Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) Top 25 Honor Roll four years running.
