Colonials Battle, Fall To Dukes In Overtime

PITTSBURGH, Pa. - The Robert Morris University men's soccer team dropped a 3-2 overtime thriller with hosts Duquesne University Sunday afternoon at Rooney Field.

Freshmen Gal Ben Dayan and Owen Jowett each scored their first career NCAA goals for Robert Morris in the loss, while Friedrich Petrelli made his first ever start in goal.

The Colonials played through a roller-coaster first half against the Dukes that featured four goals and two lead changes in the first 33 minutes of action.

After conceding an early goal to Duquesne's Ryan Landry in just the 10', RMU found themselves playing catchup in the first stages of action Sunday.

However some hard work by Ben Dayan in the attacking third led to a penalty on Duquesne and a free kick for the freshman.

Ben Dayan made the effort count, lashing a perfect strike into the lower right hand corner of the net to beat an outstretched Domenic Nascimben for the RMU equalizer.

Successive chances from Nathaniel David missed the mark, however the Colonials broke through again in the 31' when Jowett picked up a feed from Hugo Kadima and rifled it into the upper right corner of the goal from just outside the six-yard box to put RMU ahead, 2-1.

The Dukes made sure the lead was short-lived, however, leveling in the 34' after Logan Muck got loose and slipped a hard, low strike just inside the left post.

Both squads continued to hunt the equalizer in the second, however neither side managed to capitalize off of the momentum of the first 30 minutes of action.

Petrelli came up with a number of big saves to keep RMU level including several big stops on Duquesne forward Maxi Hoffer, who tested Petrelli with a number of hard strikes near the top of the box.

Kadima threatened for RMU on the other end, however both of his efforts were also turned away as the game headed into extra time.

Following a thirty minute lightning delay, both teams took the field for the extra period in the hopes of finally breaking through with the game-deciding goal.

Ben Dayan pushed one just left of the cage in OT, while Kadmia saw his effort blocked by a Duquesne defender.

The Dukes finally ended things in the 107' after Ryan Goodhew scored from about 12 yards out to snatch the win.
