Moon Township, Pa. – The RMU volleyball team opened the Mountaineer Invitational Thursday, dropping a 3-0 decision to UMBC at the WVU in the first of three matches as part of the tournament. The Colonials dipped to 6-4 (.600) overall on the 2021 season.
MOMENTS THAT MATTERED
The Colonials scored the opening point of the match, but the Retrievers used an 8-1 surge to grab control en route to a 25-12 win in the first set. Mia Bilusic finished with eight kills in the opening salvo for UMBC and garnered match-high honors in the category, finishing with 13 to go along with a .250 attack percentage, seven digs and a pair of block assists. Tied, 6-6, in the second set, the Retrievers used a 7-2 spurt to grab a 13-8 advantage on their way to a 25-19 win and a 2-0 lead in the match.

In the third and final set of the morning match, the score was again knotted, 6-6, before UMBC used a 10-3 run to grab a 16-9 cushion. Graduate student

Alyssa Hudak combined for eight kills and an .800 attack percentage during the set, but it wasn't enough as the Colonials dropped a 3-0 decision for the first time during the 2021 season.

Hudak paced RMU with seven kills and a .400 hitting percentage, finishing with just one attack error in 15 total attempts. She also registered four digs and a pair of block assists. Junior

Ashleigh Wallin dished out 12 assists. UMBC was just the third opponent for the Colonials this season to accumulate a hitting percentage above .200, finishing at .221.
UP NEXT
RMU concludes its non-conference slate with a pair of matches Friday at the WVU Coliseum as part of the Mountaineer Invitational. The Colonials go up against No. 20 Penn State at 11:00 a.m. before concluding play in the invite with a 4:30 p.m. match against George Washington.
