Box Score Moon Township, Pa. – The RMU volleyball team season ends with a loss at home to Northern Kentucky, 0-3. The Colonials overall record to finish the season is 9-21 (.300), and 2-16 (.111) in the Horizon League. RMU finished 2-9 at home, 3-10 away and 4-2 at neutral sites.
MOMENTS THAT MATTERED
The last game of the season couldn't have started any better as senior
Alyssa Hudak spiked down a kill against the opposition to take a 1-0 lead. That special moment was followed by a serving ace from freshman setter
Kaitlyn Brown. On three different occasions, the first set was tied.
Ally Christman put down a kill to tie the game up 9-9, but the Norse moved ahead and took the first set 16-25.
During the second set, the score was tied at five different times. RMU took a 2-0 lead once again to start the set. Down 5-7,
Abby Powers provided a kill and
Macy McNamara scored a service ace for the second game in a row, tying it up 7-7. RMU gave up the next three points but battled back to an 11-11 tie with kills by
Abby Ryan,
Alyssa Hudak and
Ally Christman. McNamara served another ace later on in the set and
Tatum Otolski produced a kill to force Northern Kentucky to take a timeout, tying the set 21-21. The Norse earned four of the next five points and took the set 22-25.
In set three, the Norse beat the Colonials 13-25.
Ally Christman led the Colonials in kills with three during this set, and
Allena Carmody along with
Abby Ryan led the team in digs with three each.
After the game, head coach
Danny Doherty expressed "I'm really proud of the girls for working so hard this season. I'm extremely happy with how we succeeded on the little things. As a program we're very excited for next season."
VS. THE NORSE
Carmody now holds 48 digs in five games against the Norse.
Abby Ryan owns 40 digs and 35 kills vs. Northern Kentucky. Senior
Alyssa Hudak has produced 40 kills in her career against the Norse.
Ashleigh Wallin and
Kaitlyn Brown sharing time at the setter position, teamed up for 21 assists and 12 digs.
TEAM LEADERS
At the end of the 2022-23 season the Colonials had five players with more than 100 kills:
Abby Ryan (332),
Annie Monaco (187),
Alyssa Hudak (165),
Ally Christman (158) and
Emma Brown (119).
Kaitlyn Brown and
Ashleigh Wallin successfully provided assists all season. They combined for over 1,000 assists on the year. Carmody led the team in digs with 447 and
Kaitlyn Brown was in second with 241.
Emma Brown tabbed the most blocks with 61. Behind her was
Page Gross blocking down 47.
This past season,
Abby Ryan has now reached 657 kills. Junior
Annie Monaco owns 381 career kills and digs.
Allena Carmody will return to the squad next year as a fifth-year senior. Through four years she holds 1,095 digs.
HORIZON LEADERS
The Colonials roster featured three players finishing in the top six in three major categories. Ryan finished fifth in the Horizon League in kills per set (3.29). The team's setter
Kaitlyn Brown was fifth in assists per set (5.62). Carmody ranked sixth in digs per set (3.99).
SENIOR SATURDAY
Post-game, the Colonials honored their lone senior
Alyssa Hudak. Alyssa was recruited out of Medina, Ohio. She was instrumental in helping lift the Colonials to 58 victories and 28 conference wins in her career, as well as a Northeast Conference Tournament appearance, and the 2019 NEC regular-season title. The 2019 championship was RMU's first in 11 seasons, as that team finished 25-5 overall and collected a program record 15 conference wins.
Alyssa is majoring and getting a degree in Marketing with a minor in Sports Marketing. She owns a 3.9 Overall GPA. A five-year letter winner for the Colonials, she's worn the #9 for the Colonials since 2018. She's produced in her career: 839 kills, 271 digs and 186 total blocks.
Alyssa earned a career high 15 kills vs. Elon back in August of 2019 and again at Central Connecticut State in October of 2019. She owns a single game high 18 digs vs. Eastern Michigan back in September of 2019, and tabbed a career high eight blocks vs. UIC on this day one year ago. "She's been such a great player for us for five years," said head coach
Danny Doherty. "She's an amazing individual and a very smart student. We will miss her but we're excited to see her thrive in life."
