Moon Township, Pa. – The freshman duo of goaltender Maggie Hatch and defender Kaitlyn Schooley from the Robert Morris women's hockey team and former RMU Colonial Maggy Burbidge have each been invited to compete at the World University Games in Lake Placid, N.Y. Hatch and Schooley will represent for Team USA, while Burbidge will play for Team Canada.

The tournament will take place January 11-22, 2023, and features six teams (Canada, Czechia, Great Britain, Japan, Slovakia and the United States) playing a round robin tournament, with the top four teams advancing to the semifinal. All women's preliminary round games will be played at Maxcy Hall on the campus of SUNY Potsdam.

Hatch, a native of Cleveland Heights, Ohio, and Schooley, a local product of Moon Township, Pa., will be coached by Brandon Knight, who's squad consists of 23 players. Thirteen are currently enrolled in college, 10 at the Division I level and three from Division III schools. The ten 2022 graduates on the roster are split evenly, with five from DI and five from DIII.

Burbidge, a native of Falmouth, Nova Scotia, will represent Team Canada and play for head coach Greg Bowles. Burbidge played two seasons with the Colonials and registered 16 goals and 14 assists for 30 total points in 60 career games for RMU. Canada's roster is highlighted by 2022 U SPORTS First Team All-Stars Shae Demale (Saint Mary's) and Maria Dominico (Nipissing), as well as Burbidge, an STFX forward who currently leads U SPORTS in goals (18) and points (34) in 15 games this season.

The rules state that athletes must be between the ages of 17 and 25 and have to be currently enrolled in school or have graduated in the past year. In the past, teams have been made up of club hockey and DIII players. Knight said the mandate was to field the most competitive team to be able to compete for the ultimate prize. With the NCAA in season, options are somewhat limited, but he has begun to put together a roster of current and former players from DI and DIII.

Team USA will begin the World University Games on Thursday, January 12, when they open up against Japan at 1:00 p.m. Team Canada opens its schedule on Wednesday, January 11 against Slovakia at 8:00 p.m.
