PITTSBURGH, Pa. - The Robert Morris women's lacrosse team dropped its home opener Saturday afternoon at Joe Walton Stadium, falling to the Canisius Golden Griffins 16-11. The loss drops RMU to 0-2 on the season.
MOMENTS THAT MATTERED
Despite giving up the opening goal 2:10 into action Saturday, RMU managed a quick response shortly thereafter, going up 2-1 after back-to-back goals from Julia Koterwas and Gianna Anthony with under ten minutes to play in the opening quarter. The Golden Griffins responded with a rally of their own, however, and soon managed to take a throttle hold of the game after rattling off seven unanswered to make it 8-2, including a pair each from CU's Caroline Netti and Katie Smolensky. Another from Anthony as well as tallies from Jenna Irwin and Kelley Flynn cut it back down to a three-goal game, however Canisius again scored four straight to blow the gap wide open once again, keeping RMU at arm's length the rest of the afternoon.
FOUR PIECE
Sophomore Gianna Anthony enjoyed a career day on the field for RMU, potting four of RMU's 11 goals against the Griffins, setting a new career high with her first four scores of the year. The performance was just the second multi-goal game of her career after potting a hat trick against Detroit Mercy last season. Anthony also finished with a new best four shots on goal.
MILESTONE MARKER
Anthony was not alone is scoring her first goal of the season Saturday, as Jenna Irwin, Julia Koterwas, and Kelley Flynn all found the back of the net for the first time this season. For the freshman Iriwn, the goal was the first of her NCAA career in just her second career game, while freshman Chelsea Coleman picked up her first collegiate point with an assist. Junior Jerica Obee recorded her first multi-point game for RMU with two goals and an assist.
QUOTABLES
"We're young, and we knew we had a lot of learning to do, and we're going to continue to learn. Opportunities are everywhere for this young team right now, and that hasn't been the case here in years past, so if people want to step up and make a difference and fight their way into the starting lineup, that's a possibility. We're going to be alright, we just have a lot of learning to do still." - Head Coach Katrina Silva
