AKRON, Oh. - The Robert Morris women's lacrosse team stayed perfect in conference play Wednesday with a 10-6 win over the Akron Zips at Infocision Stadium. The win moves RMU to 3-4 on the season and 3-0 in the MAC.
MOMENTS THAT MATTERED
A back-and-forth first quarter saw the Colonials and Zips trade chances up and down the field in the early going, enduring five separate lead changes before the Colonials were finally able to take a hold of the situation. Chole Hererra made it 1-0 Zips just under two minutes in, however Jenna Irwin put RMU on the board for the first time in the third straight game, opening up the scoring before Gianna Anthony made it 2-1 two minutes later with her eighth of the year. Though Akron would go up 3-2 early in the second quarter, three straight unanswered goals for RMU to end the half gave the Colonials a 5-3 cushion following two goals from Jerica Obee and Mackenzie Bell.
SHUT IT DOWN
RMU limited the Zips to just six goals on the afternoon, the fewest they have allowed all season and the fewest overall since giving up five against Detroit Mercy in a 21-5 win at the Joe on May 6 of last season. RMU is conceding an average of just 7.7 goals per game this season against MAC opponents and have kept their opponents to single-digit goals in all three wins.
MOMENTS THAT MATTERED
The Colonials picked up right where they left off to start the third, widening the gap to 8-4 following another tally from Irwin as well as goals from Chelsea Coleman and Colleen Tifft, all three of which were unassisted markers. Akron's Noelle Boyd cut the Colonial lead down to just three at 8-5, however insurance goals from Bell and Lilli Hadden helped give RMU the breathing room to hang on for their third MAC win of the season.
SPREAD THE WEALTH
RMU earned goals from seven different goal-scorers on the day, the second most for a single game this year after seeing eight find the back of the net against Detroit Mercy. Freshman Jenna Irwin extended her goal streak to six games and her first-goal streak to three games and now leads the Colonials with 15 on the year. Bell and Obee each finished with a pair, while Tifft, Hadden and Coleman also got in on the action.
NEXT UP
The Colonials return home to Joe Walton Stadium next Wednesday when they host Central Michigan at 1:00 p.m.
