PITTSBURGH, Pa. – The Robert Morris women's lacrosse team extended its MAC win streak to 18 unbeaten games Saturday with a 12-4 win over the Akron Zips at Joe Walton Stadium. The victory lifts the Colonials to 8-6 on the year and 8-0 in conference play.
MOMENTS THAT MATTERED
Colleen Tifft sent the Colonials off and running just over a minute off the opening draw Saturday, beating Akron goalie Hannah Sanders with a nice turning shot just 1:07 into the first quarter for her 20th tally of the year. Another extended bout of possession helped the Colonials keep control of play before two more quick strikes from Jerica Obee and Julia Koterwas less than a minute apart helped to push the Colonial lead to 3-0 with 10:13 left in the opening period of action. Akron answered back, scoring a pair before the first was out to make it a 4-2 RMU gap after 15 minutes, however the Colonials once again found their footing early in the second. Gianna Anthony's first of the day made it 5-2 before back-to-back free position goals from Obee and Jenna Irwin made it 7-2 RMU after 30 minutes of action.
QUOTABLES
"We played a little sloppy today, the rain didn't help, but we still did a lot of good things defensively. We got to their hips, locked up their hands like we were supposed to and caused some nice turnovers, and that gives Jamie some easy balls to save which she did." – Head Coach Katrina Silva
SCORING STREAK
The Colonials kept the momentum rolling on offense Saturday as a number of Colonials found the back of the net to keep their scoring streaks alive. Koterwas' first-half tally pushed her streak to seven games, while Colleen Tifft made it ten straight with a goal after burying the game's opening tally. Jerica Obee rounded things out with a free position tally to make it nine straight for the junior.
SHUT THE DOOR
The Colonials conceded just four goals on 11 shots on goal Saturday, the fewest goals they've allowed in a game since taking down Akron 18-4 on April 17 of last season in Akron, Ohio. RMU goalie Jamie Keller managed seven saves in the stingy defensive effort for the Colonials.
NEXT UP
The Colonials finish up their regular season road schedule next Saturday, April 23 when they take on the Central Michigan Chippewas in Mount Pleasant at noon.
