Oakland Takes Series Opener From Colonials

Colonials stifled by Sydney Campbell of Golden Grizzlies

Moon Township, Pa. – The RMU softball team opened a three-game series at Oakland Friday, falling to the Golden Grizzlies, 6-0, at the Oakland Softball Field. The Colonials dipped to 25-16 (.610) overall during the 2022 season, including 14-6 (.700) in the Horizon League.

MOMENTS THAT MATTERED
Oakland entered its three-game series with the Colonials with one of the top pitching staffs in the Horizon League, and starter Sydney Campbell kept RMU guessing in the opener. She allowed a leadoff single to freshman Alaina Koutsogiani, but the speedy rookie was thrown out trying to steal for just the third time this season to end a rally. Campbell would allow just two more hits the rest of the contest, with fifth-year Alaina York doubling with one out in the sixth and redshirt freshman Meadow Sacadura leading off the seventh with an infield single. Campbell retired six and seven consecutive batters, respectively, throughout the game, improving to 16-6 from the circle in 2022 while striking out six and walking one.

THE GOLDEN RUN

Oakland scored in the home half of the first inning thanks to an RBI single from Lauren Griffith before the Golden Grizzlies plated another with an RBI double from Allisa DiPrima in the second to grab a 2-0 advantage. Oakland (20-11 / 15-3 #HLSB) broke the game open with a pair of runs in the fourth on three hits, including an RBI double from leadoff hitter Madison Jones and a run-scoring single to left by Cammie Brummett. The top four hitters in the lineup for the Golden Grizzlies collected six hits, scored three and drove in three to bolster the effort.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE

Senior Erika Bell finished 0-for-3 Friday, snapping a streak of 22 consecutive games safely reaching the base, the longest by a member of the Colonials since 2011. Senior Dana Vatakis took the loss in the circle for RMU, falling to 7-6 overall on the year by allowing four earned runs in 3.2 innings. She allowed eight hits and one walk while striking out four.
