Moon Township, Pa. – RMU cross country and track & field coach
Bryan Delsite announced Tuesday that
Brent Shelby has been named associate head coach and camp director for the Colonials. As part of his duties with the Colonials, he will coach the throws.
"We're extremely excited to welcome Brent to the RMU track & field family," Delsite said. "The addition of Coach Shelby is an absolute home run for our program. He comes to us with a proven track record of developing student-athletes as well as achieving success at the national level. Throughout his career Brent has shown a strong commitment to student-athlete development and welfare."
Shelby joins RMU after spending the last seven seasons at the University of Pittsburgh, where he served as assistant coach. While with the Panthers, Shelby, a native of Westlake, Ohio, coached both the men and women in all throws disciplines for both indoor and outdoor track & field while also overseeing weight training plans and implementations for each student-athlete. He also served as academic liaison for the program and assisted in recruiting.
Pitt throwers shined under the national spotlight under Shelby's tutelage during his tenure with the Panthers. Grant Jones advanced to the 2016 NCAA Preliminary Round in the javelin as a rookie, while Andin Fosam qualified for the 2017 NCAA Championships in the hammer throw. Fosam established Pitt program records in the weight throw and hammer throw en route to her appearance at the 2017 NCAA Championships.
Prior to his stint with the Panthers, Shelby spent six years as assistant track & field coach and recruiting coordinator for Youngstown State. The Penguins broke eight school records as well as establishing eight Horizon League marks while Shelby served on the coaching staff. In addition, during his tenure at YSU the Penguins saw 39 student-athletes earn individual conference championships, while 12 garnered either Horizon League Performer or Newcomer of the Year plaudits.
"Brent has coached at the highest level of NCAA Division I having coached in the ACC, but what attracted RMU the most is he is very familiar with the Horizon League thanks to his time at Youngstown State," Delsite said. "He's a proven recruiter in Western Pennsylvania, and we're excited to welcome Brent, his wife, Beverly, and daughters Stella and Zamira to the RMU family."
Shelby is a 2006 graduate of Kent State University, where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in psychology. He was a student-athlete for the track & field program with the Golden Flashes, qualifying for the NCAA Regionals each of his four years during the outdoor campaign in the discus as well as three times in the shot put and once in the hammer. For indoor track & field, Shelby was an NCAA provisional qualifier in the shot put in his final two years with the program.
Claiming the 2003 Mid-American Conference (MAC) outdoor championships in the discus, Shelby also won the 2004 MAC title in the shot put during the indoor campaign. He began his coaching career as a volunteer assistant at Kent State before his first stint at Pitt, serving as throws coach from 2007 to 2009.
