Moon Township, Pa. – RMU concludes their road trip with a 65-48 loss at Youngstown. The Colonials are now 7-9 (.438) overall, and 1-6 (.143) in Horizon League action.
MOMENTS THAT MATTERED
Junior
Mackenzie Amalia got the Colonials going on the night as she assisted sophomore
Rebecca Dwomoh and then scored a bucket of her own. The next basket was her once again as she scored from distance making it a 7-8 score. Center
Danielle Vuletich then produced the next two scores including a layup and a three-pointer to tie it up 12-12. At the end of the first quarter, RMU was down 14-12.
Youngstown managed to spoil RMU's offense in the second quarter as they outscored the Colonials 17-7. Freshman
Louella Allana stepped up scoring four of the team's points in the second period. The Penguins 12-0 scoring run in the middle of the frame proved to be a difference maker heading into halftime up 31-19.
Getting back on the right foot, the Colonials started the second half on a 6-2 run. Sophomore
Phoenix Gedeon took over and dominated on the offensive side scoring 12 points in the third quarter alone. RMU posted their best 10 minutes of play in the third quarter, scoring 17 and only giving up 13 points. Heading into the fourth quarter, RMU was only down by eight, 44-36.
Beginning the final quarter, Youngstown quickly scored six points, but the Colonials depleted that with a three-point basket by their point guards
Mackenzie Amalia and
Louella Allana. Following those plays, YSU went on a 14-4 run to seal the deal. The Penguins scored 21 in the fourth quarter and finished with a 65-48 win.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
As stated in the preview, this matchup featured the two most dominant forwards in the Horizon League in RMU's
Phoenix Gedeon and YSU's Lily Ritz. Gedeon recorded her sixth double-double of the season producing 17 points and 10 caroms. Ritz paced for 19 and added 14 boards. Junior point guard
Mackenzie Amalia was perfect tonight from behind the arc going 2-for-2. She scored 12 points and led the team in assists with three. Vuletich provided eight points and shot 50% from the floor. Freshman
Louella Allana had seven points and dished out two assists along with six rebounds.
MILESTONE ACHIEVED
Gedeon has now reached over 200 points on the season, leading the team in that category. She's also earned over 300 career points. Amalia has eclipsed 100 points on the year, and is inching her way towards 300 career points. She's two field goals away from 100 as a Colonial. Dwomoh reached 100 on the year as well.
