Box Score Moon Township, Pa. – RMU concludes their time in Michigan with a 64-58 loss against the Detroit Mercy Titans. The Colonials are now 7-8 (.467) overall, and 1-5 (.167) in Horizon League play.
MOMENTS THAT MATTERED
The Colonials got off to the right start as they took an early 4-0 lead with baskets made by sophomores
Simone Morris and
Alejandra Mastral. The remainder of the first period consisted of a back and forth battle.
Danielle Vuletich provided two baskets and Mastral scored again with 18 seconds left as RMU took the lead 19-18 into the second quarter.
Detroit Mercy found their groove in the second and third quarter as they outscored the Colonials during that time frame. The Colonials scored 11 points in both the second and third quarter, but on the other hand, Detroit Mercy put up 15 and 20 points. Scoring efficiently in the third period, Detroit Mercy posted a field goal percentage of 61.5%, and shot 50% from behind the arc. Detroit Mercy stretched their lead up to 14 points during the third set. Amalia for the second time this season scored a floating jump shot at the buzzer. Going into the fourth quarter, the Colonials were down 53-41.
With determination to make a comeback, RMU went on a 9-0 run. Freshman
Fatim Sarr Ndow scored two baskets in the paint and
Rebecca Dwomoh offered up a three-pointer that went in. Mastral finished off the scoring run making two free throw shots, making the score 53-50 in favor of Detroit Mercy. Both
Mackenzie Amalia and
Simone Morris scored from distance but the comeback fell just short as the Titans won 64-58.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
Alejandra Mastral had herself a game as she played in 38 minutes on the floor and went 6-for-11 (.545) from the field. She scored a career high 15 points after scoring her previous best last game at Oakland (1/5). Mastral also provided a team best and career high five steals. Point guards Amalia and
Louella Allana both dished out three assists. Amalia and Vuletich both landed in double digits as they put up 10 points each.
Both the Colonials and Titans shot about the same from behind the arc as RMU was 5-for-15 and Detroit Mercy was 5-for-16. What helped Detroit Mercy secure the victory was out rebounding the away side 51-20. The Colonials barely got to the line which didn't help them add to their score. RMU was perfect from the charity stripe making all five, but on the other end of the court, the Titan made 17 of 22 from the line.
DEFENSE FIRST
The Colonials did make it a difficult day for the Titans as they stole the ball 14 times compared to a pair for Detroit Mercy. Off those turnovers, head coach
Charlie Buscaglia's squad made the most of it scoring 19 points. On the day Detroit committed 26 turnovers while RMU only had nine. The Moon Township squad also continued their success in the paint by scoring 32 in the crease.

The Colonials road trip ends with Horizon League play in Youngstown, Ohio as they'll face the Penguins on Thursday, Jan. 12 at 7:00 p.m. RMU returns home on Saturday, Jan. 14 at 1:00 p.m. taking on IUPUI in the UPMC Events Center.
