Colonials Fall at St. Bonaventure

Morris leads way with 17, Barnwell totals 14 for RMU

St. Bonaventure, N.Y. – The Colonials closed its two-game road trip on Saturday afternoon, dropping a 70-52 decision at St. Bonaventure in non-conference action at the Reilly Center.

With the loss, the RMU women's basketball team drops to 1-1 overall while the Bonnies improve to 1-1 this season.

MOMENTS THAT MATTERED
It was a hot start for the Colonials, jumping out to an early 8-1 lead after hitting three of their first five shots. Sophomore Louella Allana buried a three to start the run, followed by another triple from junior Simone Morris. Classmate Naomi Barnwell capped the stint with a jumper with 5:14 remaining in the opening quarter. St. Bonaventure would respond, ending the quarter on a 15-4 run to grab a 16-12 advantage. Dani Haskell and Isabellah Middleton combined for 10 of the 15 points for the Bonnies. RMU would begin the second quarter by scoring seven consecutive points, thanks in part to a pair of baskets from Barnwell and junior Danielle Vuletich, along with a triple from Morris, 19-16. Later in the quarter, the Bonnies held a 25-23 lead before the two squads traded the next 10 points. St. Bonaventure would connect on a pair of jumpers to end the half, heading to the locker room with a 34-26 lead.

SECOND HALF STINGER
The Bonnies shot 50.0 percent (6-of-12) in the third quarter alone and used a 15-4 run to extend its lead. Barnwell began the second half with a layup for RMU before St. Bonaventure connected on 5-of-9 shots from the field to hold a 49-32 advantage at the 3:31 mark. The Colonials would trim the deficit by scoring eight of the next 12 points to end the third quarter. Barnwell, Morris, freshman Madison O'Dell and Micah O'Dell all registered baskets for RMU. In the final frame, the Colonials cut the Bonnies lead to nine with a pair of Morris free-throws before St. Bonaventure grew its lead, 68-50 by scoring nine straight points.

THE DIFFERENCE
On the defensive end, the Bonnies forced 23 turnovers while netting 30 points off those turnovers against the Colonials. St. Bonaventure did its damage in the opening half, forcing 13 first half turnovers while scoring 19 off those mistakes. The home team was +9 on the glass, out-rebounding RMU 38-29 while collecting 10 offensive boards. RMU would outscore the Bonnies in the paint 28-22.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS
Morris would pace the Colonials with 17 points while knocking down 3-of-5 from behind the arc and a perfect 6-of-6 from the charity stripe. She recorded four boards and a block while Barnwell chipped in 14 points and three boards. She finished 7-for-9 from the field, with a team leading two steals. Vuletich finished with six points and six boards while sophomore Natalie Johnson collected four caroms and junior Alejandra Mastral totaled four assists.

UP NEXT
RMU returns to Moon Township for its home opener, when it welcomes Akron on Wednesday, Nov. 15 at the UPMC Events Center, with the opening tip set for 11:00 a.m.
