RIT Sweeps RMU

Townend produces his second multipoint effort of the season

Rochester, N.Y. – RMU lost the second game of the series, 2-6. The Colonials are now 2-11-3 overall in the 2023-24 campaign and are 1-9-2 in Atlantic Hockey contests. The Tigers move up to 10-4-0 overall and 8-2-0 in conference action.
 
1st PERIOD
  • RMU came out with speed and more time spent in the offensive zone tonight in the opening period. The Colonials outshot the Tigers, 15-10 and goaltender Chad Veltri recorded nine saves.
  • The score was 0-0 until four minutes remaining, Simon Isabelle scored a shorthanded goal to give the Tigers a 1-0 lead before the first intermission.
2nd PERIOD
  • The middle frame was full of action as there were five total goals scored.
  • RMU jumped out to a 2-1 lead across the first 15 minutes of the period.
  • From the point, Cade Townend unleashed a hard slap shot on goal. Providing the net front presence, Cameron Garvey tipped the puck down and Walter Zacher scored his first career goal, smashing in the puck.
  • Later in the period, carrying the puck, Luke Johnson found Jackson Reineke down the right side in the offensive end. Making a nice pass across the ice, he found Cade Townend on the back post to give the Colonials a 2-1 lead.
  • Across the next three minutes, RIT gained the momentum, scoring three goals to take back a 4-2 advantage into the final period.
3rd PERIOD
  • Entering the final period, Philippe Jacques scored a brace for the Tigers. His second goal was on the power play with 10 seconds remaining in the game.
  • Goaltender Chad Veltri made 16 saves in the third.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
From Buffalo, N.Y., freshman Walter Zacher scored his first career goal on the road. He's averaging .5 points per game with one goal and four assists in 10 career games. Cameron Garvey was slotted to first-line center, producing an assist. He now has three points on the year. Zacher and Garvey both finished with a +1. Freshman Jackson Reineke also dished out his first career assist on the night. With an assist, defenseman Luke Johnson now has four points on the year. Mitch Andres led all skaters in blocks with four. From Brainerd, Minn., Andres is the team-leader in blocks (31). RMU won just over 50% of faceoffs of the night (34-65). Logan Ganie won a team-high 10 faceoffs. Cameron Hebert almost won all of his draws on the night (8-9). Both programs finished 1-4 on the night on the power play.
 
TWO FOR TOWNEND
For the second time this season, Cade Townend posted a multipoint effort. He did so the last time at Niagara (11/17) scoring a shorthanded goal and recording one assist. Tonight, he scored another special teams' goal on the power play while also dishing out one assist. From Carleton Place, Ontario, Townend is closing in on 150 career games played as he's reached 142. On the year, he's paced for four goals and four assists. Across his career, he owns 18 goals, 28 assists and 46 points.
 
UP NEXT
Next week, the Colonials will play a home-and-home series with Niagara University. RMU will welcome Niagara for the first game at Clearview Arena on Thursday, December 7 at 7:00 p.m. That game will be broadcasted on SportsNet Pittsburgh. On Saturday, December 9, the Colonials will then visit the Purple Eagles to wrap up the series at 7:00 p.m.
