Niagara University, N.Y. - The RMU men's hockey team earned their first sweep of the season, beating Niagara on the road, 3-1. The Colonials are now 4-11-3 overall on the year and 3-9-2 in AHA games. Niagara moves down to 6-10-1 overall and are 5-7-1 in Atlantic Hockey.
1st PERIOD
- Back in their home arena, the Purple Eagles determined to split the series came out strong. They threw nine shots on goal through the first 10 minutes, all being saved by goaltender
Chad Veltri.
- Later in the opening period, freshman
Matthew Boczar won the puck by himself in the neutral zone. Entering Niagara's end, he slipped a shot in past their goalie to give RMU a 1-0 lead.
- No more goals were scored through the rest of the period. Niagara led in shots, 14-8.
2nd PERIOD
- Across the middle frame, no goals were scored.
- Niagara led in shots, 16-10. RMU's penalty kill was perfect, killing off all three of Niagara's power plays.
3rd PERIOD
- Five minutes into the final period, the Purple Eagles tied it up. Connor Mylymok scored their lone goal on the night.
- Halfway through the period, RMU earned the second power play of the night. From the point,
Gabriel Lunn sniped in a goal through traffic to bring the Colonials back up one. The goal was assisted by
Dallas Tulik and
Rylee St. Onge.
- Nearing the end of the game, the Colonials killed off another penalty. After doing so, captain
Rylee St. Onge skated down the other end and scored an empty-net goal to secure a 3-1 victory.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
Freshman
Walter Zacher led the team in shots with five. Owning the most blocks on the night was once again graduate defenseman
Mitch Andres. His three blocks against the Purple Eagles bring him to 39 on the season. Netminder
Chad Veltri came up big again for RMU, making 50 saves in the game. Tonight was the third time on the year he's made 50+ saves in a game. In 11 games, he's finished with 30 or more saves.
COLONIAL FIRSTS
Freshman
Matthew Boczar and
Gabriel Lunn both scored their first career goals in tonight's victory. Lunn's finish on the power play went down as the game-winning goal.
HEATING UP
For the second game in a row, forward
Rylee St. Onge produced a goal and an assist, giving him four points in the series sweep over Niagara. From St. Catharines, Ontario, he now owns five points in his last four games (2-3--5).
UP NEXT
The Colonials will play one more series before the holiday break. Next weekend, RMU will host Arizona State University on Saturday, December 16 at 7:00 p.m. and then the following day at 5:00 p.m.
