Moon Township, Pa. – The RMU softball team wrapped up play in the Low Country Classic Sunday, notching its first shutout of the year with a 4-0 victory over host Charleston at the Softball Field at Patriots Point. The Colonials own an overall mark of 4-5 (.444) during the 2022-23 thanks to the win.
MOMENTS THAT MATTERED
All of the runs in the contest were scored in the top of the fourth, when the Colonials batted around and brought four home on four hits. RMU also took advantage of a pair of errors by the Cougars. Junior
Faith Miller opened the inning with a single to left center, and after junior
Charlotte Grover reached on an error, moving Miller to third, an infield single from senior
Avery Winchell brought home the game's first run. A throwing error on Winchell's single from Charleston starter Drayton Siegling made the score 2-0 in favor of the Colonials, as Grover trotted home.
TWO MORE
Redshirt sophomore
Meadow Sacadura followed in the fourth with a single up the middle, giving RMU a 3-0 advantage by scoring Winchell. That would spell the end for Siegling, who was pulled in favor of Caroline Conner. Sophomore
Anna Resnik stepped to the plate for the Colonials as the first hitter to face Conner, and she was hit by a pitch. Conner settled down and got two quick outs before junior
Julia Ehrman loaded the bases with an infield single. Sophomore
Alaina Koutsogiani then worked a seven-pitch walk, bringing home Sacadura to give the Colonials a 4-0 cushion.
MIX AND MATCH
Junior
Jane Garver got the starting nod Sunday and struck out the first two hitters she faced before yielding a single to center. She got out of the inning by getting Brooke Tranum to line out to Koutsogiani at third before setting down the Cougars in order in the second. In the bottom of the third, Kayla Guiterrez drew a one-out walk that was followed by a double to left center from Aniz Roman. Garver struck out Karlee Hughes before being replaced by fifth-year
Dana Vatakis, who got out of the jam unscathed with a fielder's choice. Vatakis went the next three innings to earn her first win of the year from the circle, not allowing a hit while walking three, and sophomore
Madison DeVault closed it out with a scoreless seventh.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
The trio of Miller, Winchell and Sacadura have been as consistent as any for RMU in the early going of the 2023 season, coming for nine runs and 13 RBI. Each has started the first eight games of the year and each are hitting .280, having gone 7-for-25 at the dish.
