Moon Township, Pa. – The RMU softball team concluded play in the T-Mobile Crimson Classic in Tuscaloosa, Ala., Sunday, dropping a 1-0 decision to Longwood. The Colonials dipped to 5-9 (.357) overall during the 2023 season.
MOMENTS THAT MATTERED
A pitcher's duel to open the final day of the Crimson Classic, RMU fifth-year starter
Dana Vatakis and Longwood hurler Maggie Chapin went inning for inning hanging zeros. Jaden Pone opened the game with a double down the line in left but was quickly relegated to the bench when redshirt sophomore catcher
Meadow Sacadura threw her out trying to steal third base. Chapin, meanwhile, allowed a one-out double to sophomore
Anna Resnik in the bottom of the second but got out of the inning by getting junior
Catalina Saxen to pop out to end the threat.

JAM OR JELLY
Korynna Anderson opened the bottom of the fifth with an infield single and advanced to third on a throwing error, giving Longwood (10-8) an opportunity to grab the lead. Vatakis followed by striking out Sophia Knock swinging to earn the first out of the inning. Kate Westmiller was called on to pinch hit, but she grounded out to sophomore
Alaina Koutsogiani, keeping Anderson at third. Vatakis ended the frame with another swinging strikeout, setting down Lauren Fox on five pitches.

IN CONTROL
Chapin faced just one hitter above the minimum Sunday for the Lancers, as after allowing the double to Resnik in the second she set down 16 consecutive Colonials to end the game. Longwood broke through in the home half of the seventh with the winning run. Anderson doubled with one out, and after Vatakis struck out Maryanna Guy looking on a full count, Emily Vinson singled up the middle to bring home Anderson with the winning run.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
Vatakis took another tough-luck loss, scattering five hits and a pair of walks while striking out six. She induced 11 groundouts in the contest in slipping to 2-5 overall this season. Chapin improved to 4-3 in the posting the complete game, striking out four.
