Colorado Springs, Colo. – In the regular season finale, RMU was defeated by Air Force, 13-5. The Colonials finish ASUN play, 4-5 and 7-7 overall. The Falcons finish up the regular season 10-5 overall and 7-2 in conference contests.
MOMENTS THAT MATTERED
The Colonials fell behind early on 2-0 in Colorado. After a successful clear with six minutes remaining in the first quarter, RMU held offensive possession for most of the 80 seconds. With barely any time left before a shot clock violation,
Eric Swagerty found
Elliot Holden in the slot to snipe in his 14
th of the season. After each team shared a possession, Air Force found the back of the net, making it 3-1. RMU won the next faceoff and peppered two shots on goal, earning a ground ball off both saves. Finally,
Nick Pelletier finished in a shot to bring the score back to within one. At the end of the first quarter, the Falcons led 4-2.
Air Force scored the first two goals of the second quarter again. But, the Colonials earned a chance on the man-advantage for the first time of the game.
Will Johansen knocked in his 15
th of the season, assisted by
Elliot Holden. The two captains teamed up to bring the score within three. Following that goal, the Falcons then scored two more in a row. With three minutes remaining in the first half, freshman
Liam Blakely rocked in a goal. At the end of the first half, Air Force continued to be ahead, 9-4.
To begin the second half, sophomore
Zach Seppi won the face-off and rounded up the ground ball to head into the offensive zone for the Colonials. RMU drew a penalty and headed back out on the power play. Clark extended his goal streak to 16 games with a man-up goal, making the score 9-5. Over the next two periods, the Falcons scored four more goals and held the Colonials off the scoresheet for the rest of the way. After 60 minutes of play, Air Force won the game 13-5.
DEFENSE CAN SCORE TOO
Against the Falcons, freshman defenseman
Liam Blakely sniped in his first career goal. Throughout the 2023 campaign, defenseman and long-stick midfielders on the Colonials have consistently produced. Blakely, along with
Owen Down and
Rowan Hynes each scored a goal this season.
Johnny Chaisson at the long-stick midfielder position provided two assists in the 2023 campaign. Senior
James Leary posted one goal and two assists, and fifth-year
James Christoforatos led dmen and long-stick midfielder in points with four goals and four assists on the season.
Defensively vs. Air Force,
James Christoforatos and
Christian Krauch both caused two turnovers each. On the back end,
Owen Down and goalkeeper
Nate Randall both caused one turnover as well.
SEPPI THE SPECIALIST
Face-off specialist
Zach Seppi took 12 draws today for the Colonials. He won nine of them, owning a .750-win percentage. On nine of those wins, he took matters into his own hands, scooping up the ground ball seven times. Those seven ground balls tied his career-high, as he picked up seven at Canisius (2/26), and vs. Hobart (3/4). Seppi has now reached 50 career face-off wins for RMU.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
On the day, the Colonials took 23 shots, with 13 of them being on net. In goal,
Nate Randall and
Liam Rosenthal tag teamed for 14 saves. RMU was almost perfect on clears, as they successfully got through the neutral zone 16 of 18 attempts. In the face-off circle,
Zach Seppi and
Steven DelleMonache combined for 12 wins on 22 face-offs.
UP NEXT
The Colonials return home for the ASUN Tournament, as RMU is hosting the tournament for the 2023 campaign. With a 4-5 record in conference play, RMU earns the #6 seed in the bracket, and will face #3 Jacksonville at 4:00 p.m., on Tuesday May 2
nd at the Joe Walton Stadium. The winner will go on to face #2 Air Force at 4:00 p.m., on Friday May 5
