Opening Kick-Off
  • The Robert Morris University men's soccer team will host Niagara this Sunday, August 27 at 1:00 p.m.
  • Last time out, the Colonials opened their season with a big, 5-0 win over VMI.
  • Several players got on the scoresheet against the Keydets. Victor Koah, Alex Lorigny, Gabe Norris, Anass Hadran and Kyler Miller all scored their first goals of the season. Darren Gray, Kosi Udeh, Tim Koczulap and John Paul Mbuthia all recorded their first assists of the 2023 campaign.
  • In their first regular season game with the program, head coach Jonathan Potter, along with his assistants Abraham Lopez-Mendoza and Austin Gorman, won their first game for RMU.
  • In 2022, sophomore Victor Koah was named to the Horizon League All-Freshman Team. As a first-year, the England native produced two goals and two assists. This year, Koah scored the first goal of the season for the Colonials.
  • Last year, midfielder Connor Hain was tabbed to the Horizon League All-Academic Team.
  • Senior Chase Gilley was awarded Offensive Player of the Week on two occasions in the 2022 campaign.

The All-Time Series (Niagara) – RMU has played Niagara on 16 occasions, winning nine of them. The most recent win came for Niagara the last time these two teams met in 2017. The Colonials last win came in 2015, playing the Purple Eagles in New York. For everyone on the roster, this will be their first-time facing Niagara, come Sunday.
 
Scouting the Purple Eagles – In the previous season, Niagara finished with a 5-9-6 overall record and 4-2-4 in conference play. In the MAAC playoffs, they got past Siena in the first round. The score was tied 1-1 after overtime, and the Purple Eagles advanced to the semifinal, winning 4-3 in penalty kicks. They then fell to Quinnipiac, 5-2. A few of Niagara's key players from last season were seniors and therefore graduated. Rodrigo Almeida led the team in 2022 in points, scoring 10 goals and three assists. Gabriel Mikina finished with five goals and two assists. And, their main playmaker Stephen Hasse recorded one goal and nine assists in 2022. In net, Josh Savoni started 14 games for the Purple Eagles, earning four wins and making 37 saves. Sophomore Jamie Barry started in the other six games, picking up one win and stopping 34 shots.
 
POTTER'S FIRST VICTORY
By beating VMI 5-0, head coach Jonathan Potter was able to start the team off 1-0 which hasn't happened since 2015 for the men's soccer program. The last time the Colonials began the season 2-0 was in 2007. In that year, RMU began the campaign 3-0, beating Duquesne 2-0, Canisius 2-1 and Pitt 3-0. Potter and his team will look to remain undefeated through the first two games, as it was last accomplished 16 years ago.
