Colonials Open 2024-25 Season with 5-1 Win Over Miami (Ohio)

Wilson and LeDonne each score twice; Kochendorfer earns first career win

OXFORD, Ohio – The RMU men's hockey team kicked off the 2024-25 season with a decisive 5-1 victory over previously undefeated Miami (Ohio). The Colonials handed the Redhawks their first loss of the season, improving to 1-0-0 to begin the campaign.
 
FIRST PERIOD HIGHLIGHTS
  • RMU came out strong, registering five shots in the opening five minutes.
  • Freshman Trent Wilson netted RMU's first goal of the season with a long-range shot through traffic. Michael Craig and Cody Monds picked up assists on the play.
  • Ten minutes later, Wilson doubled the Colonials' lead, capitalizing on a play set up by George Krotiris and McKay Hayes after stealing the puck in the neutral zone.
  • This marked the first time Miami faced a two-goal deficit through their first five games.
 
SECOND PERIOD HIGHLIGHTS
  • Early in the second, while returning to even strength, Trevor LeDonne emerged from the penalty box and scored on a breakaway, assisted by Wilson and Braden Rourke, making it 3-0.
  • Just five minutes later, LeDonne added his second of the game with help from Michael Felsing and Mitch Deelstra.
  • RMU extended its lead to 5-0 halfway through the period when Walter Zacher found the back of the net, assisted by Tanner Klimpke and Cameron Garvey.
  • Miami responded with their only goal of the game a minute later.
 
THIRD PERIOD HIGHLIGHTS
  • Both teams had two power-play opportunities but failed to convert.
  • RMU successfully killed off a 5-on-3 Miami power play, preserving their dominant lead.
 
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
Each team recorded 24 shots on goal, with Miami winning 30 of 47 faceoffs. RMU blocked six shots, while Miami blocked eight. Neither team capitalized on the power play—Miami went 0-4, and RMU 0-3. A total of 12 different Colonials registered points in the win.
 
COLONIAL FIRSTS
Transfers Mitch Deelstra and Cody Monds each notched their first assist as Colonials. Deelstra now has 41 career points (20-21—41), while Monds owns 38 (14-24—38). Freshmen Michael Felsing and Braden Rourke made an impact in their NCAA debuts, both recording their first assists. Freshman goaltender Croix Kochendorfer earned his first career win, stopping 23 shots.
 
WELCOME TO THE SHOW
Trent Wilson had a stellar collegiate debut, scoring RMU's first two goals and adding an assist for a three-point night. The Tsawwassen, B.C. native also led the team with a +3 rating and won a team-high six faceoffs.
 
TWO FOR TREVOR
Senior defenseman Trevor LeDonne posted his first career two-goal game, marking his third career multipoint performance. The Stoney Creek, Ontario native now has three goals and eight assists in 78 games.
 
FUN FACT
Wilson and LeDonne's two-goal performances mark the first time two Colonials have scored multiple goals in a game since McKay Hayes and Rylee St. Onge did so in a 7-3 win over Stonehill last season on January 6.
