RMU Men's Hockey Beats AIC, 4-1

Meilun earns first win at RMU

MOON TOWNSHIP, Pa. – Powered by a three-goal outburst in the third period, the RMU men's hockey team secured a 4-1 victory over AIC on Friday night. With the win, the Colonials improve to 5-5-2 overall and 2-3-1 in Atlantic Hockey America action.
 
FIRST PERIOD
  • Freshman Connor Gourley opened the scoring just three minutes into the game with his first career goal, assisted by Luke van Why.
  • Both teams had opportunities on the power play, with RMU going 0-for-1 and AIC 0-for-2.
  • RMU outshot AIC 13-11, and forward Mitch Deelstra nearly doubled the Colonials' lead on a breakaway following a successful penalty kill.
 
SECOND PERIOD
  • AIC evened the score four minutes into the second period.
  • Each team went 0-for-1 on the power play, with RMU continuing to hold a slight edge in shots, 11-8.
 
THIRD PERIOD
  • Early in the period, RMU earned a five-minute power play but was unable to capitalize. The Colonials were later forced to kill a penalty during the same sequence, where Tanner Klimpke nearly scored shorthanded on a breakaway.
  • With five minutes left, Dominic Elliott broke the tie, scoring off a rebound after a setup from George Krotiris and McKay Hayes.
  • Just a minute later, Klimpke netted a shorthanded goal during an AIC five-minute power play, extending RMU's lead to 3-1.
  • Gavin Gulash sealed the win with an empty-net goal 23 seconds later, his third tally of the season.
 
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • RMU outshot AIC 33-31, with sophomore Cameron Garvey leading the team with six shots.
  • The Colonials went 0-for-3 on the power play but delivered a perfect penalty kill, stopping all six AIC opportunities.
  • RMU had a slight edge in the faceoff circle, winning 31 of 61 draws. Freshman Trent Wilson won a team-high 11 faceoffs.
 
FROM BLUE LINE TO BLUE LINE
Sophomore defenseman Luke van Why registered an assist, recorded a +3 rating, and blocked a team-high four shots. The Hatfield, Pa., native now has five points on the season (1g, 4a).
 
MEILUN'S FIRST
Junior goaltender Dylan Meilun earned his first victory with RMU, making 30 saves against AIC. Meilun, now with three career wins, is closing in on the 1,000-save milestone, currently at 973.
 
UP NEXT
The Colonials will look to secure their first conference series win of the season in game two against AIC on Saturday. Puck drop is set for 5:00 PM at Clearview Arena.
