Garvey and Zacher lead the way with multipoint performances

BUFFALO, N.Y. – The RMU men's hockey team delivered a dominant performance, scoring five goals to defeat Canisius, 5-2, in the opening game of their weekend series. With the victory, the Colonials improve to 7-7-2 overall and 4-5-1 in Atlantic Hockey America (AHA) play.

FIRST PERIOD

SECOND PERIOD
  • The Colonials took control in the second period with a strong two-way performance, scoring twice while limiting Canisius to just four shots on goal.
  • At the halfway point, Gabriel Lunn set up Cameron Garvey with a long pass, allowing Garvey to skate in on a breakaway and score the game's first goal.
  • With under a minute remaining, Tanner Klimpke extended the lead with a goal shortly after an RMU power play ended. Garvey and Walter Zacher picked up the assists.

THIRD PERIOD
  • RMU continued to apply pressure in the final frame, adding three more goals:
  • Just 59 seconds in, Greg Japchen scored his first goal as a Colonial off assists from Garvey and Michael Felsing.
  • Less than three minutes later, Zacher made it 4-0 with a sharp finish, assisted by Mitch Deelstra and Luke van Why.

  • Canisius added a late goal in the final minute, but the Colonials held on for a convincing 5-2 win.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS
RMU outshot Canisius 27-23, with Zacher leading the team with six shots on goal. The Colonials went 0-for-2 on the power play but successfully killed off two of three Canisius man-advantage opportunities. In the faceoff circle, RMU held a slight edge, winning 32 of 63 draws, with Garvey and Trent Wilson each winning 10. Defensively, RMU blocked seven shots, and goaltender Dylan Meilun earned his second win of the season with 21 saves.

MULTIPOINT EFFORTS
  • Walter Zacher: The Buffalo native had a strong performance in his hometown, recording a goal and an assist for his fourth multipoint game of the season and eighth of his career. In 49 career games, Zacher has 15 goals, 21 assists, and 36 points.
