ROCHESTER, Mi. – Oakland's Maddy Skorupski notched the game-winning buzzer-beater in overtime to defeat RMU, 67-65. With the loss, RMU falls to 6-17 overall and 2-13 in Horizon League action while Oakland improves to 10-13 on the season and 6-9 in conference play.
1st HALF
The first quarter started out in a complete back and forth battle as there were six lead changes in the first frame alone. The story of the game was how much RMU battled back after being down as it was seen at the end of the first half when the Colonials were down by 11 points and cut the deficit to six before halftime.
Simone Morris,
Naomi Barnwell, and
Danielle Vuletich combined to have nine points in the second quarter to help RMU come within striking distance heading into the third quarter.
2ND HALF
The Colonials offense kept chipping away in the third quarter when
Natalie Johnson drained a three-pointer with 7:17 remaining to give RMU their first lead since the first frame, 31-30. Each team went shot for shot in the third as both teams scored 17 points in the quarter which gave Oakland the six-point advantage going to the fourth frame. In the fourth quarter, RMU went 3-6 from beyond the arc but it was their defense that proved to be stout down the stretch. The Colonials held the Golden Grizzlies scoreless for over four minutes at the end of the quarter as RMU went on a 9-0 run during that stretch.
Simone Morris hit two clutch free throws followed by a pull-up jumper to cut the lead to four for Oakland. Just over a minute later,
Rebecca Dwomoh nailed a huge three-pointer to take the lead 60-59 with 48 seconds left in the game. Afterwards, Oakland hit one of two free throws with 22 seconds remaining to help send the game to overtime.
OVERTIME
RMU started the extra frame in good shape as the Colonials hit two of their first three shots in overtime courtesy of
Louella Allana and
Rebecca Dwomoh. Oakland was able to hold RMU to just one point in the final two minutes of play but the Colonials did have their own opportunities. Dwomoh missed two free throws and had a chance for a game-winning three in the final seconds but Oakland got the rebound with 1.5 seconds and called a quick timeout. Soon after, the Golden Grizzlies inbounded the pass and Skorupski took the pass and quickly turned around and nailed the jump shot to win the game.
QUOTABLES
RMU Head Coach
Charlie Buscaglia started out his postgame comments with, "I've Been saying this throughout this tough stretch we've had that the last thing this team has done is quit. The effort today for 45 minutes was outstanding and the passion was at 100% to keep competing for the win." Buscaglia added, "Many teams going through a stretch like this wouldn't continue to push hard and stay together for everyone in the locker room." Buscaglia closed his statement by saying, "We did so many things right to get this road win against the strong opponent, only to fall one possession short. However, we are going to keep going after it every day and keep knocking on the door. Eventually, that door will open, and we will have learned a lot through this adversity."
