RMU Men's Hockey Hosts Canisius for Final Home Stand

RMU Game Notes (2/16 - 2/17)

MOON TOWNSHIP, Pa. – RMU Men's Hockey welcomes Canisius for their last home regular season series this upcoming weekend. The first game of the series is scheduled for Friday, February 16 at 7:00 PM. The series finale at Clearview Arena on Saturday will be Senior Day. Puck drop is scheduled for 5:00 PM. Both games will be broadcasted on SportsNet Pittsburgh and streamed on FloHockey. Tim Benz (pxp) and Mike Prisuta (analyst) will be on the broadcast and Nathan Breisinger will provide commentary rink side for Saturday's contest.
 
RMU LATELY
This past weekend, RMU (10-19-3, 7-13-2 #AHA20) split their series at Army. The Colonials fell the first night, 3-1 but rebounded the following day, winning 4-3. Freshman Jackson Reineke scored the lone goal in Friday's contest and handed out a helper on Saturday. In the 4-3 win, 10 different skaters contributed offensively. Graduate forward Logan Ganie scored the game-winner in the third period. Continuing to produce with an assist at West Point, freshman Tanner Klimpke owns the most goals and assists on the team (11-10—21). From Kalamazoo, Mich., Dallas Tulik possesses a team-high 14 assists. Blue liner Cade Townend is also closing in on 50 career points. He currently owns 48 in his career (18-30—48). Among active AHA defenseman, he's placed seventh in all-time points.
 
BLOCK BARRIER
Throughout the 2023-24 campaign, the Colonials have turned in an NCAA-leading blocked shot total of 475. The Colonials are averaging 14.8 blocks per game. Each skater under head coach Derek Schooley has pitched in to prevent shots on net – but a few have stood out. A workhorse for the defensive unit, graduate defenseman Mitch Andres is ranked in the top five in the conference in blocked shots with 59 this season. All-time in AHA history, Cade Townend owns the 12th most blocks, owning 203. And, among forwards, freshman Cameron Garvey is sixth in the AHA posting 33 blocks as he plays a vital role on the penalty-kill.
 
CHAD CHASING ALL-TIME RECORDS
From Pittsburgh, Pa., netminder Chad Veltri in his fifth season of collegiate hockey has performed one of the best campaigns in program history. He is second among all Division I goaltenders in saves this season with 906. Veltri also owns a .916 save-percentage which ranks in the top 15. Heading into his final regular season home series of his career, Veltri has the opportunity to climb the Atlantic Hockey all-time leaderboards in several statistical categories with four games left and playoffs around the corner.

ALL-TIME VS. CANISIUS
Across 38 total games against Canisius, RMU is 22-12-4. The Colonials are averaging 3.79 goals per game in the all-time series. Six games have ended in overtime and RMU has earned two shutouts against the Golden Griffins. RMU's best win-streak happened from 2012 to 2014, winning five straight. Playing at Clearview Arena, the Colonials are 12-3-1 when hosting Canisius. Earlier in the campaign, the Colonials traveled up to Buffalo for a single game. The Golden Griffins pulled away winning 5-1. McKay Hayes scored the team's lone goal. Michael Craig and Logan Ganie each gathered an assist. Freshman goaltender Michael Sochan appeared in his first career game that day, posting eight saves in the third period and didn't allow a goal.
 
SCOUTING CANISIUS
Canisius (9-17-4, 8-10-4 #AHA20) travels to Moon Township, sitting in eighth place in the Atlantic Hockey standings. Heading into this series, they're 2-5-1 in their last eight contests. Three of those games ended in extra time. Statistically, they've been led by Matteo Giampa, cashing in on 16 occasions so far, which ranks third in the conference. He also sits in the top 10 in points (28). Defenseman Powell Connor (67) and Brenden Datema (60) own the second and fourth most blocked shots across the AHA.

Upon completion of their final home stand, RMU will travel to Colorado to take on Air Force for their final regular season series of the 2023-24 campaign. The two-game set is scheduled for February 23-24.
