RMU's Offense Pushes Comeback to Beat IUPUI, 10-9

Winchell and Hopf extend hitting streaks to nine and five games; Poulich records first career home run

MOON TOWNSHIP, Pa. – For the second straight game, Avery Winchell hits a home run in the sixth inning to push the Colonials to victory. RMU's 10-9 win brings them to a 7-13 overall record and 2-2 record in the Horizon League. IUPUI is now 5-24 overall and 1-3 in conference action.

GAME 1
  • To open the first game of the series, the Colonials took an early 4-0 lead through the first two innings.
  • In the first inning, Avery Winchell slapped a hit to right field as leadoff hitter Kaylyn Hopf scored the first run of the game.
  • Onto the second inning, RMU loaded the bases. Back to the top of the lineup, Hopf poked a hit into the outfield, advancing each runner one base to make it 2-0.
  • Batting next, junior Anna Resnik slammed a 2RBI double, bringing home Meadow Sacadura and Charlotte Grover.
  • Entering the third, IUPUI responded with two runs to cut the deficit in half.
  • The Colonials got right back to the offense in the fourth as Hopf ran home off a wild pitch, increasing RMU's lead by three runs.
  • Over the next two innings, the visitors gathered seven runs to take a 9-5 advantage.
  • In the bottom of the sixth inning, although down by four runs, the Colonials fought back to go ahead in the final inning.
  • Starting the rally, with two runners on base, outfielder Courtney Poulich battled to an 11-pitch at-bat. On the 11th pitch she saw, Poulich cranked her first career home run to deep left field, pulling the Colonials within one.
  • With Kaylyn Hopf back on base, graduate Avery Winchell came up clutch once again, smacking a home run to give RMU a 10-9 lead.
  • Freshman Kailani Tatro shut down the final three batters as the Colonials went on to win the first game of the series.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
On the day, freshman Kaylyn Hopf had a perfect on-base percentage, recording three hits, one walk, three runs and earned one RBI. Avery Winchell, Courtney Poulich and Charlotte Grover each added two hits in the game. Winchell and Poulich each produced three runs batted in and Grover scored twice. In the circle, Jamiee Hardy started the game. She went four innings and threw two strikeouts. Senior Jane Garver did some work in the middle of the game, pitching 1.1 innings. To finish off the victory, Kailani Tatro earned her second career win, earning the last five outs and only giving up one hit.

QUOTABLE
"We'll do whatever it takes to win. If it's a 1-0 win then we'll find a way. If it's a 10-9 game then it has to be a 10-9 win. There's no expectation of exactly how to win. We did a good job hitting early and then IUPUI's offense put up some runs which cost us, but our offense stepped up and really embraced that idea that they'll do whatever it takes to win this game." – Head Coach Jexx Varner

"Courtney (Poulich) is somebody that has just needed some time. She's a phenomenal ballplayer and hitter. We could tell she's been getting closer and closer over these last few weeks and that's why she earned a start today. She's been battling and fouling many pitches off. It was only a matter of time before she ran into one so it was great to see." – Head Coach Jexx Varner

"Kaylyn (Hopf) has been our lightning rod. She got on base every single time today which gives our 2-5 hitters the opportunity to do something special. That's just the tip of the iceberg for her as she's just a freshman. We're very excited for what she'll continue to do. Our lineup continues to get deeper and it'll be really dangerous for teams to deal with." – Head Coach Jexx Varner
