RMU Women's Basketball Falls at Detroit Mercy in Barbasol #HLWBB Championship First Round

DETROIT – The RMU women's basketball team fell on the road in the first round of the Barbasol Horizon League Women's Basketball Championships to Detroit Mercy, 59-48.

1ST HALF
After the ball tipped off there wasn't any scoring to start the game until the 6:45 mark when Danielle Vuletich put the Colonials on the board with a layup. RMU would then continue to put points up as they went on an 11-5 run to begin the game as Simone Morris was responsible for five points in that run. Detroit Mercy however battled back and ended the first quarter on an 8-0 run that would tie the game at 13.

The Colonials came into the second quarter ready to shoot the three ball as RMU went 3-5 from beyond the arc in the second frame. Triples from Louella Allana and Morris gave RMU the lead with just under four minutes to go in the half. Unfortunately for the Colonials the second quarter ended just like the first with the Titans finishing the half on an 8-0 run to seize the 32-24 lead.

2ND HALF
The third quarter didn't go as planned for the Colonials as they went 0-6 from beyond the arc and just weren't able to finish at the basket when needed. Detroit Mercy capitalized from the free throw line in the third quarter as they went 5-7 from the charity stripe, while RMU was just 1-2 as they had trouble getting to the line all game long. RMU however did battle back at the end of the quarter with a couple made baskets in a row from Micah O'Dell but still trailed the Titans by 12 entering the final quarter.

RMU hit the ground running in the fourth quarter as they made it difficult for the Titans to maintain any possessions they had to open up the frame. The Colonials forced six turnovers in the fourth quarter which was the most in any quarter while the offense got the team back into the game. RMU was able to get a turnover and steal from Rebecca Dwomoh who finished at the rim to cut the Colonial deficit to seven with 2:33 remaining. However, Detroit Mercy's next possession was a three-pointer drilled by Lucia Fleta Robles that put the lead back to 10 and it ended up being too much for RMU to overcome in the final minutes.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS
Juniors Danielle Vuletich and Simone Morris each tallied a game-high 15 points while Vuletich added a team-high eight rebounds as well. Micah O'Dell added six points off the bench in just 10 minutes of action.
