Colonials Sweep Purdue Fort Wayne in Horizon League Opener

MOON TOWNSHIP, Pa. – The RMU volleyball team opened Horizon League action with a commanding 3-0 match win over Purdue Fort Wayne on Friday night.

With the win, the Colonials improve to 6-6 and have won three in a row while the Mastodons drop to 7-7 on the season.

KEY SET MOMENTS
  • The Colonials offense came ready to play in the conference opener as they tallied 17 kills with a match-high .317 hit percentage in the first stanza. The Mastodons didn't do themselves any favors with seven attack errors compared to RMU who had four.
  • RMU picked up where they left off in the second set as they were down 5-4 before going on a 6-0 run as Jaaliyah Evans led the charge with four kills during that run. However, the Mastodons battled back to even the score at 20 behind a match-high four blocks in the set. The Colonials didn't give up as they scored five out of the last six points to take the set and put the Mastodons on their heels.
  • The final set was much like the first set as the Colonials controlled the offensive tempo and jumped out to an early 14-9 lead. Purdue Fort Wayne's offensive struggles continued as they had a whopping 12 attack errors in the third stanza which made the RMU lead grow even more. Once again, with the score 22-18 in favor of RMU it was the Colonials who took over the end of the set and went on a 3-0 run to end the match which was capped off by an Azra Eric ace.
WINNER WINNER
The Colonials have now won three matches in a row over the past two weekends. The last time RMU won at least three matches in a row was during the 2022 non-conference slate when the Colonials won five matches in a row.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS
Jaaliyah Evans led the Colonials with 12 kills on a team-high 35 total attacks while Hillarie Adams also reached double digits with 10 kills and a team-high .320 hit percentage. RMU had 68 digs total with three players in double digits as Jaidan Hockman led the way with 20 followed by Natalie Stepanovich (14), and Ashleigh Wallin (10).
