RMU Men's Hockey Closes Out Homestand with Series Against Mercyhurst

MOON TOWNSHIP, Pa. The RMU men's hockey team is set to conclude its homestand with a two-game series against Mercyhurst. The Colonials will face off against the Lakers on Friday, January 31, and Saturday, February 1, with puck drop scheduled for 7:00 PM both nights at Clearview Arena.

RMU LATELY
RMU (9-14-3, 6-10-2 #AHA) is looking to bounce back after a 4-2 loss to Canisius earlier this week. Walter Zacher and Trevor LeDonne each found the back of the net, while Adam O'Marra and Thomas Haynes recorded their first career points with assists on LeDonne's goal.
 
Through 26 games, sophomore Tanner Klimpke leads the team in points (20) and +/- rating (+10), while Zacher continues to lead the team with 12 goals. Captain Michael Craig has a team-high 13 assists, and junior Greg Japchen leads the Colonials defensively with 39 blocked shots.
 
FRESHMAN IMPACT
RMU's young talent has made an immediate impact, with multiple freshmen ranking among the top in AHA rookie scoring:
  • Dominic Elliott (D) – Leads all AHA freshman defensemen with 14 points (4g, 10a).
  • Trent Wilson (F) – Ranks second among AHA freshman forwards with 16 points (5g, 11a).
  • Michael Felsing (F) – Also second among AHA freshman forwards, matching Wilson with 16 points (4g, 12a).
 
ALL-TIME VS. MERCYHURST
Since 2004, RMU and Mercyhurst have met 45 times, with the Colonials holding a 20-15-10 (.556) all-time record against the Lakers. Seventeen of those contests have gone to overtime or a shootout, and RMU has averaged 3.27 goals per game against Mercyhurst while going 10-6-4 at home.
 
Earlier this season, RMU defeated Mercyhurst 5-2 in a single-game meeting in Erie. The Colonials were fueled by two-goal performances from Walter Zacher and Gavin Gulash, while Dominic Elliott notched his first career goal and an assist. Michael Craig dished out three assists, tying his career-high for points in a game.
 
SCOUTING THE LAKERS 
Mercyhurst (3-20-3, 3-13-2 #AHA) enters the weekend at the bottom of the AHA standings and remains winless on the road (0-11) this season.
 
Key Players to Watch:
  • Dustin Geregach (D) – Leads the team in assists (12) and points (18); named a Hobey Baker Award nominee.
  • Riley Fitzgerald (F) – Owns a team-high seven goals.
  • Trent Sambrook (D) – Leads the team in blocked shots (48).
  • Goaltending: The Lakers have rotated between three goalies, with graduate netminder Carter McPhail appearing in the most games and earning one win, while sophomore Simon Bucheler has registered two victories.
 
UP NEXT
After wrapping up their homestand, RMU will hit the road for a two-game series at Bentley in Waltham, Mass. The series is set for February 7-8.
