Colonials Pick Up Thrilling 64-62 Win Over Duquesne

MOON TOWNSHIP, Pa. – The RMU women's basketball team picked up a thrilling 64-62 win over Duquesne on Tuesday night to remain perfect on the season and grab their first win over the Dukes since 2009.

FIRST QUARTER
  • The Colonials found themselves out ahead of Duquesne 9-3 with 6:04 left in the first quarter after back-to-back free throws by Layke Fields to give RMU its biggest lead of the first quarter.
  • Duquesne fought back, going on a 12-0 run to put themselves ahead of RMU 15-9 with 1:31 left on the clock. The 12-0 run would be the Dukes best run of the entire game.
  • A Malcolm layup with 17 seconds left on the clock cut Duquesne's lead down to three, with Duquesne leading 17-14 at the end of the first quarter.
  • The Colonials shot 53.8%, going 7-for-13 on the floor. Myriam Traore led RMU with five points, which included a three-pointer from deep. RMU held a lead in the first quarter for 5:17. 
SECOND QUARTER
  • Duquesne extended its lead to eight to begin the second half before Noa Givon hit her second three of the night to cut the lead back down to five.
  • The Colonials tied the game up 22-22 with 6:07 on the clock as Ava Leroux hit a pair of free throws after drawing a foul on the rebound.
  • RMU took a five-point lead at 4:13 as Jada Lee hit a three-pointer to give the Colonials their biggest lead of the quarter.
  • A layup by Duquesne Raevin Washington brought the game to two as RMU led 32-30 with 1:27 left on the clock.
  • Neither team would score the rest of the quarter, sending the game to halftime at 32-30 in favor of the Colonials.
  • RMU shot an impressive 66.7% from deep, going 4-for-6 led by Givon, who went a perfect 3-for-3 from beyond the arc in the second quarter.
  • In the first half, the Colonials went 8-for-10 from the free-throw line.
THIRD QUARTER
  • With 8:28 on the clock, RMU extended its lead to seven as Bailey Kuhns made a jump shot outside the Paint to make it 37-30.
  • A Givon layup at 6:20 extended the Colonials' lead to double-digits after a 5-0 run by RMU.
  • The team's traded baskets the rest of the quarter, with RMU ending the third quarter up 50-45 after Duquesne got a late basket by Harriet Ford with five seconds on the clock to close out the third quarter.
  • Offensively, RMU had its best quarter of the night, shooting 63.6% from the floor while shooting 50% from deep.
FOURTH QUARTER
  • Duquesne took the lead with 7:02 on the clock as Alexis Bordas hit one from beyond the arc to put Duquesne out 54-52 before the Colonials tied the game with a layup by Ava Leroux.
  • RMU regained the lead as Traore made a layup to put the Colonials out 56-54 with 5:53 on the clock before Duquesne tied it back up with a layup of their own with 4:14 left.
  • Givon continued her offensive attack, giving the Colonials the lead back on a layup before Duquesne got another layup of their own.
  • The Colonials found themselves up 61-58 as Aislin Malcolm made a layup while drawing the foul to send her to the line, where she made the free throw to extend RMU's lead to three.
  • A layup by Duquesne with 29 seconds on the clock cut the Colonials' lead back down to one before Lee made a free throw to give the Colonials the two-point lead.
  • With three seconds on the clock, Aislin Malcolm hit a pair of free throws to put the Colonials up four. Duquesne would hit a layup with one second on the clock, but the Colonials were able to inbound the ball and run out the clock to secure a 64-62 win.
INSIDE THE BOXSCORE

As a team, RMU shot 38.9% from the floor and 39.1% from beyond the arc. The Colonials went 9-for-23 from deep. RMU held Duquesne to just 39 rebounds in the match. Duquesne was averaging 53.5 RPG before entering the matchup and was ranked second in the country in rebounding.

Noa Givon had a huge night for the Colonials, scoring 21 points, featuring 5-for-9 shooting from deep. She also recorded two assists and a rebound in the win.  Myriam Traore was the next highest scorer for the Colonials with 13 points. Traore knocked down three three-point shots in the contest, shooting 3-for-7 from beyond the arc. Traore also recorded five rebounds, a block, and a steal.
 
Eva Levingston and Ava Leroux each recorded five rebounds along with Traore to lead the Colonials on the glass. Nearly every player for the Colonials recorded at least one rebound in the contest.
 
The win over Duquesne marks the first win for the Colonials over the Dukes since 2009.
 
UP NEXT
 
RMU (4-0) will stay local as the Colonials will travel to Oakland to take on Pittsburgh (3-2) on Saturday afternoon at the Petersen Events Center.
