IOWA CITY, Iowa – Robert Morris opened its season on Tuesday night with a familiar face on the opposing side, as former Colonial Alvaro Folgueiras, now with Iowa, helped the Hawkeyes in their 101-69 victory.
1st HALF
Iowa opened the game with offense, using a 14-0 run to push their lead to 17-2 at the 14:42 mark, forcing an RMU timeout. The Hawkeyes capitalized on Robert Morris mistakes, scoring 8 points directly off 4 RMU turnovers in the first minutes. Iowa built their lead to 20 points shortly after, hitting that mark at the 12:08 mark, following five straight points from Folgueiras. The Colonials struggled to close the gap as Iowa doubled up the score at 38-19 by the under-four minute media timeout. The Colonials went into the locker room trailing 49-23 at halftime.
2nd HALF
Iowa continued to build on its lead early in the second half. At the 16:24 mark, a Stirtz dunk pushed the Hawkeyes' advantage to 26 points. Iowa maintained its dominant position throughout the period, with the lead swelling to its largest margin of 38 points at the 8:59 mark, when the score stood at 84-46.
HEAD COACH ANDY TOOLE
"We got hit with a haymaker to start out the game and weren't able to recover. The pace, the environment, and the quickness that decisions needed to be made – we weren't ready for that. But the response of being down early I thought was good. The guys were together on the bench and really supporting each other to raise their level. There were moments where we saw some good possessions and things looked like they made sense, but the way the game started was not the way we needed to function. against any opponent."
