RMU Women's Basketball Powers Past Akron at Home

MOON TOWNSHIP, Pa. – The RMU women's basketball team continued its strong start to the season with a 70-61 win over Akron on Friday night at the UPMC Events Center to move to 2-0 to begin the year.
 
FIRST QUARTER
  • In the first quarter of action, RMU found themselves in a quick rhythm as the Colonials led Akron 8-2 at the 5:36 mark as Aislin Malcolm went 2-for-2 from the free throw line to give the Colonials their biggest lead of the first quarter.  
  • With 1:07 to go, Akron hit a free throw to bring the game within three before Noa Givon got herself on the board with a hook shot outside the paint to make it 15-10 before going into the second quarter.
  • In the first 10 minutes of play, RMU maintained the lead for 8 minutes and 32 seconds. The Colonials shot 33% from the floor while Akron shot 29% with one made three-point basket.
  • Malcolm provided RMU a big offensive spark in the first quarter with nine points, along with a steal and a block. The Colonials scored six second-chance baskets and got four points off Akron turnovers.
 
SECOND QUARTER
  • Following a slow start to the second quarter, RMU found themselves out ahead by seven with 2:27 to go as Bailey Kuhns got a second-chance basket to put RMU up 29-22, their biggest lead of the quarter.
  • The Zips battled back with less than a minute to go as Akron went on a 7-0 scoring streak, including a made jump shot right before the buzzer to tie the game up at 29-29 going into halftime.
  • Turnovers played a significant role in second-quarter scoring, as Akron recorded nine points off turnovers, while RMU had eight. Both teams scored eight apiece from the paint, while Akron got seven points from fast breaks and eight points from the bench.
  • Givon had her best quarter of the night, leading RMU with seven points, going 3-for-3 from the floor along with one basket from deep.
  • RMU shot 46% from the floor in the second quarter, going 6-for-13. The Colonials shot 50% from behind the arc, going 2-for-4 from deep.
 
THIRD QUARTER
  • RMU went on a huge 10-0 run in the third quarter as the Colonials led the Zips 39-29 with 3:08 to go, as Eva Levingston went 2-for-2 from the foul line. RMU maintained a small lead throughout the rest of the quarter as the Colonials led 42-36 at the buzzer.
  • In the lowest offensive quarter of the night, RMU scored 13 points, including four points off turnovers, as the Colonials forced seven turnovers while also recording two steals.
  • Jade Lee registered four points in the quarter to lead the Colonials, while Levingston and Myrian Traore each contributed with three, Traore's coming from beyond the arc.
  • Robert Morris continued to dominate the glass, having a 12-7 advantage in the third quarter, led by Kuhns with three.
FOURTH QUARTER
  • The RMU offense exploded for 28 points in the fourth quarter, shooting 62% from the field and an impressive 92% from the free-throw line, going 11-for-12. Givon went a perfect 4-for-4 from the line.
  • RMU recorded its biggest lead of the night as the Colonials found themselves up by 12 with 8:18 left to go, ahead of Akron 50-38.
  • Akron brought the game within four as the Zips made it 52-48 with 5:58 to go, but ultimately RMU's defense locked down and maintained the lead for the remainder of the contest.
  • Malcolm and Traore led the offense in the fourth quarter as Malcolm recorded nine points, bringing her game total to 20 points, while Traore contributed with seven. RMU scored 20 points in the paint and forced 19 Akron turnovers for 23 points. The Colonials got 16 points off the bench.
 
INSIDE THE BOXSCORE
 
Aislin Malcolm continues to provide an offensive surge for the Colonials, recording 20 points to lead RMU. Noa Givon (15) and Myriam Traore (11) were the other two Colonials to reach double-digits. Bailey Kuhns and Eva Levingston controlled the glass for RMU, with Kuhns pulling down 11 and Levingston grabbing seven. RMU held a commanding 38-26 advantage in rebounds over the Zips. As a team, RMU shot 43% percent from the floor and went 20-for-25 from the free-throw line, with Malcolm and Givon perfect from the stripe.
 
UP NEXT
 
RMU (2-0) will head back on the road next Thursday as the Colonials take the drive to Loretto to face off against Saint Francis in non-conference action. Tipoff is scheduled for 6:00 p.m. and will be available to watch on NEC Front Row.
