USAF ACADEMY, Colo. – The RMU men's hockey team dropped a 4-1 result to Air Force in the series opener Friday night. The loss brings the Colonials to a 3-10-2 overall record and a 3-3-1 mark in Atlantic Hockey America (AHA) play.
FIRST PERIOD
After an even opening 19 minutes, the Falcons struck twice in the final 24 seconds of the period to take a 2-0 lead into intermission.
Holt Oliphant opened the scoring, and Chris Hedden added another with just one second remaining. Shots were even at 7-7.
SECOND PERIOD
Neither side found the back of the net in the second period. Air Force held a 13-9 shots-on-goal advantage, while RMU generated one shot during its lone power play opportunity.
THIRD PERIOD
RMU nearly sparked a comeback early in the third when
John Babcock rang a shot off the post. Moments later, Air Force increased its lead to 3-0 on a goal from Brendan Gibbons before Jake Peterson added another for a 4-0 advantage.
The Colonials broke through in the final minute as captain
Cameron Garvey sliced past a defender and set up
Michael Felsing for his third goal of the season.
Michael Craig collected the secondary assist.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- Air Force outshot RMU 30-22; sophomore Braden Rourke led RMU with four shots on goal.
- Garvey, Tanner Klimpke and Dominic Elliott each posted a team-best +1 rating.
- Garvey won a team-high 11 faceoffs; Patrick Johnson went 6-of-9 in the circle.
- RMU blocked 10 shots, with senior Greg Japchen blocking four.
- Both teams were held scoreless on the power play (Air Force 0-for-1, RMU 0-for-3).
- Freshman goaltender Charlie Schenkel finished with 26 saves.
POINT STREAK
Junior captain and defenseman
Michael Craig extended his point streak to three games with an assist on RMU's late tally. The St. Catharines, Ontario native has posted two goals and two assists over this three-game stretch.
