SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The RMU women's hockey team battled to a 2-2 tie Saturday afternoon in the series finale at Syracuse, then clinched the extra point with a 1-0 shootout victory. The result gives the Colonials five of six possible points on the weekend, and a series win over the Orange. RMU moves to 8-12-2 overall and 6-6-2 in Atlantic Hockey America (AHA) play.
FIRST PERIOD
Syracuse opened the scoring midway through the period when Emma Gnade finished a power-play opportunity—the first Orange goal of the weekend. RMU had to weather significant penalty trouble, taking four minors in the period but killing off three of them.
The Colonials pushed back before the break. In transition,
Jessica MacKinnon drove up the left wing and fed
Thalia D'Elia joining the rush. D'Elia then slid a pass across to freshman
Alexis Vrana, who buried her first career goal to even the score at 1-1.
Syracuse held a 16-11 advantage in shots after one.
SECOND PERIOD
RMU finally earned some power-play time of its own with two opportunities but couldn't convert.
The breakthrough came late in the frame when
Catriona Crarer forced a turnover on a strong forecheck. From there,
Laura Eustace connected with
Alaina Giampietro cutting to the net, scoring the go-ahead goal. Shots were level in the period at 11-11.
THIRD PERIOD
Syracuse wasted little time finding an answer, tying the game less than two minutes into the third as Heidi Knoll struck for the Orange.
Both teams generated looks throughout the frame—including another RMU power play—but neither side could find a decisive goal, sending the game to overtime.
OVERTIME
In the 3-on-3 extra session, goaltender
Maggie Hatch delivered another outstanding performance. She stopped all eight shots she faced in overtime, while RMU produced five attempts of its own. Giampietro accounted for three of those five shots, consistently driving play in the offensive zone.
Despite the chances at both ends, the deadlock persisted through 65 minutes, pushing the game to a shootout.
SHOOTOUT
Hatch remained perfect, turning aside all three Syracuse shooters. Giampietro—who scored in regulation—delivered once again as the lone goal scorer in the shootout, securing two of three points for RMU in the standings.
