RMU Softball Opens 2025 Season at Red and Black Classic

MOON TOWNSHIP, Pa. – The RMU softball team is set to kick off its 2025 campaign at the Red and Black Classic, hosted by Gardner-Webb at Brinkley Softball Stadium in Boiling Springs, N.C.
 
The Colonials open tournament play on Friday, February 14, with a doubleheader against Iona (10:00 AM) and Sacred Heart (12:30 PM). Action continues Saturday with another doubleheader, facing Iona (10:00 AM) before taking on host Gardner-Webb (3:00 PM). RMU wraps up the tournament on Sunday, February 16, at 12:30 PM against Gardner-Webb. Live stats will be available for all games.
 
2024 SEASON RECAP
Under head coach Jexx Varner, RMU finished the 2024 season 20-24 overall and 13-10 in Horizon League play, earning the No. 5 seed in the #HLSB Championship. The Colonials opened the postseason with a pair of wins over No. 4 NKU (7-2) and No. 1 YSU (3-1) before falling to Cleveland State and NKU on the fourth day of the tournament.
 
KEY RETURNERS
RMU returns a strong core, led by team captains:
  • Anna Resnik – Has started 145 games in her career and surpassed 100 career hits last season.
  • Courtney Poulich – Led RMU with six home runs in 2024, including two homers and five RBI in the conference tournament.
  • Alaina Koutsogiani – A consistent presence, starting all 146 games of her career. Reached 100 career hits and 50 RBI last season.
  • Madison DeVault – Led the Horizon League in saves (8) last season while ranking fourth in opponent batting average (.240), sixth in strikeouts (81), and seventh in ERA (3.30).
 
SERIES HISTORY
vs. Iona – RMU has faced the Gaels once, a 4-3 loss in 2018 in Clearwater, Fla.
 
vs. Sacred Heart – The Colonials own a 26-16 (.619) record against SHU, with the teams last meeting in 2019. RMU averages 4.12 runs per game against the Pioneers.
 
vs. Gardner-Webb – RMU is 2-3 all-time against the Runnin' Bulldogs, winning their last matchup 7-6 in 2023. In that game, Logan Black and Anna Resnik each scored a run, while Madison DeVault pitched three innings with four strikeouts to earn the win.
 
SCOUTING THE OPPONENTS
Iona (18-29, 14-10 MAAC in 2024) – The Gaels reached the MAAC Tournament as the No. 5 seed, defeating Rider but falling to Canisius and Niagara.
 
Sacred Heart (27-29, 16-8 NEC in 2024) – The Pioneers advanced to the NEC Tournament but were eliminated after losses to Saint Francis and Central Connecticut State.
 
Gardner-Webb (3-1 in 2025) – Off to a strong start, the Runnin' Bulldogs won three straight games at the Runnin' Bulldog Classic after an opening loss to West Georgia.
  • Junior Ella Christopher leads the team with 10 hits and eight RBI through four games.
  • Junior pitcher Alli Stidham has logged 10 innings with a 1.40 ERA.
  • In 2024, Gardner-Webb finished 33-20 overall and 9-9 in Big South play.
 
UP NEXT
RMU will remain in the South for another five-game tournament at Murray State in Murray, Ky., scheduled for February 21-23.
