Colonials Drop OT Battle to Niagara, 2-1

RMU splits series; Garvey nets goal for second-straight game

MOON TOWNSHIP, Pa. – A 4-on-3 power-play goal in overtime by Shane Ott lifted Niagara to a 2-1 victory, as the Purple Eagles secured a series split with RMU. The Colonials now hold a 10-18-4 overall record, including a 7-14-3 mark in Atlantic Hockey America (AHA) play.
 
FIRST PERIOD
  • For the second straight night, the opening frame remained scoreless.
  • RMU controlled play early, outshooting Niagara 13-4.
  • Both teams had one power-play opportunity but were unable to capitalize.
 
SECOND PERIOD
  • The Colonials struck first just over a minute into the period. Off a faceoff win, McKay Hayes worked the puck back to Dominic Elliott, whose shot from the corner was tipped in by Cameron Garvey for his seventh goal of the season.
  • Midway through the frame, RMU was assessed a five-minute major penalty, giving Niagara an extended power play.
  • The Purple Eagles took advantage, with Tyler Wallace netting the equalizer.
  • Niagara outshot RMU 18-6 in the period.
 
THIRD PERIOD
  • A defensive battle ensued, with neither team finding the back of the net.
  • Niagara held a slight 8-7 shot advantage in the frame.
  • In the final seconds of regulation, RMU was called for a penalty, sending the Colonials into overtime shorthanded.
 
OVERTIME
  • Niagara capitalized on the man-advantage, scoring on its first shot of overtime. Shane Ott netted the game-winner to give the Purple Eagles the 2-1 victory.
 
BY THE NUMBERS
  • Niagara outshot RMU 31-26 and held the edge in the faceoff circle, winning 58.6% of draws.
  • Walter Zacher led the Colonials with four shots on goal, while Garvey won 12 faceoffs.
  • Special teams played a key role, with both of Niagara's goals coming on the power play.
  • RMU blocked 23 shots, with Gabriel Lunn leading the team with four.
  • Freshman goaltender Croix Kochendorfer delivered another strong performance, stopping 29 shots.
 
UP NEXT
RMU wraps up the regular season with a two-game home series against Air Force on February 21-22. Puck drop is scheduled for 7:00 PM both nights at Clearview Arena.
