RMU Women’s Hockey Falls in Double Overtime at Syracuse in AHA Quarterfinal

SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The RMU women's hockey team battled to the end in a double-overtime thriller but fell to Syracuse, 3-2, in sudden death. The Colonials close out their season with an 8-24-3 overall record.
 
FIRST PERIOD
The game remained scoreless through the first 10 minutes before RMU earned the first power-play opportunity. The Colonials generated seven shots during the advantage but couldn't break through.
 
Moments later, Janelle Evans appeared to put RMU on the board, but after a video review, the goal was overturned. The period ended with RMU outshooting Syracuse 15-11.
 
SECOND PERIOD
Syracuse struck first early in the second frame, as Heidi Knoll capitalized to give the Orange a 1-0 lead. RMU responded with consistent offensive pressure, outshooting Syracuse 12-8 and controlling the faceoff circle, 11-6, but remained scoreless heading into the third.
 
THIRD PERIOD
The Colonials came out flying in the third, tying the game just 90 seconds in. Jersey Phillips forced a turnover in the neutral zone and executed a quick give-and-go with Mya Neugent before burying the equalizer.
 
Ten minutes later, RMU took its first lead of the game. Thalia D'Elia set up Morgan Giannone near the left side, and from a sharp angle, Giannone found the top right corner to make it 2-1.
 
However, momentum shifted after RMU took back-to-back penalties. Syracuse took advantage on their second power play, as Bryn Saarela netted the tying goal with four minutes remaining. RMU continued to control play in the third, outshooting Syracuse 10-6 and winning 14 of 21 faceoffs.
 
FIRST OVERTIME
The Colonials dictated play throughout the first overtime, outshooting Syracuse 5-1. Both teams remained disciplined, avoiding penalties, but neither side could find the game-winner, sending the contest into double overtime.
 
SECOND OVERTIME
Syracuse wasted no time in the second extra frame, ending the game on its first shot. Peyton Armstrong delivered the decisive goal, securing the Orange a trip to the AHA semifinals.
 
BY THE NUMBERS
  • RMU outshot Syracuse 42-27 and won 40 of 67 faceoffs.
  • Giannone led the team with six shots on goal, while Phillips won 13 faceoffs.
  • Phillips, Giannone, and Neugent finished with a team-best +2 rating.
  • Freshman Shayne Desjardins recorded four blocked shots.
  • Goaltender Lucy Phillips made 24 saves in the effort.
